How to Solve the Rubik’s Cube (for Absolute Beginners)

Hey! Are you looking to solve the Rubik’s Cube? I’m gonna show you! All it takes is 7 easy steps and a few minutes. Keep practicing and you’ll be solving it in just a few days! I am 16 now, I learned how to solve the Rubik’s Cube 5 years ago. Now with this method I can solve it in 30 seconds. However, if you want to get faster, learn the CFOP method or another method. I use my own method. I can solve it in 15 seconds. Good luck! :)

Supplies

A Rubik’s Cube

Paper and pen (optional for writing down the steps)

Notation

The first step is to learn the basic notation. I will be using this. The Rubik’s Cube is solved through a few different sequences called “algorithms”. We use letters to represent these.
F- Front
B- Back
U- Up
D- Down
L- Left
R- Right
If you see an i (inverse) after a letter, move this side counterclockwise instead of clockwise. If there’s a 2, move that side twice, direction does not matter, it just has to be in the same direction.

Solve the Cross

After you’ve memorized the notation start by making a white cross on the top of the cube. Make sure the center is white. Match each white edge with its respective second color then move it so the white part matches with the white side.

EVERY COLOR SHOULD BE MATCHING! For example white and red. White is on top, red is with the red center. Do this for all 4 colors. You can see this in the images.

Solve the Corners

Next we are going to complete the white layer. We need to get the corners into place. Take your desired corner, make it so its sides are on the front and right sides. For the example I am using the red, white, and blue corner. Put that corner in the front face on the right side, either top or bottom.

Do this algorithm until it’s solved.
Ri Di R D
Once you solved that one, keep going around the whole cube.

The Second Layer

Now we want to get all the second layer edges in their place. Put white on the bottom and align an edge with one of its colors. If it goes in the left slot, do the left algorithm. For the right, use the right algorithm.

Left algorithm: Ui Li U L U F Ui Fi
Right algorithm: U R Ui Ri Ui Fi U F

The Yellow Cross

Now we want to complete the yellow cross. You should have one of 3 cases if not solved.
1. Center only
2. Small “L” shape
3. Line

Do this algorithm 3 times for the center, twice for the L, and once for the line (make sure it’s horizontal).
F R U Ri Ui Fi

Aligning the Cross With Its Colors

If two adjacent cross edge colors are unsolved, put a solved one on the right and an unsolved one in front and do this algorithm.

R U Ri U R U2 Ri U

Permuting the Top Corners

There should be 3 or 4 unsolved corners if they are not all solved. If there are 3 put the solved one on the top right and do this algorithm

U R Ui Li U Ri Ui L

Final Step: Orienting the Corners

Get a disoriented corner and put it in the top right. Do Ri Di R D until it’s fixed.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!! Do not turn the cube around. Instead move the top face to repeat the process. Otherwise you messed up everything.

Congratulations! You have solved the Rubik’s Cube! Now show off your skills to your family and friends :)
