How to Sharpen Our Knife With a Whetstone

Hi my I’m Nathan, and today I am going to show you the easiest way to sharpen any knife in 5 steps. So easy I learned in a day. I have used these methods to sharpen my knives for 2 years. So anyone can can do this as long as they are careful when sharpening. The first things you’ll need is a wet stone and a knife. It doesn’t matter what kind of knife as long as it isn’t serrated fully and has a solid edge. Submerge your wet stone in water for the recommended amount of time from the manufacturer.

First you’ll need to buy a wet stone and find a knife that needs to be sharpened along with a water supply. The wet stone you buy will very in price some cost more than others. The dual sided wet stones generally cost more but easier to work with and take up less space while in storage. The higher the grit the sharper the knife will be; and you’ll need to have a lower grit side as well. The lower grit is the side we use first so it corrects more of the edge at a time than the high grit. It is also recommended that you buy a wet stone with a rubber or slip resistant base to set it on/in.

The first thing you will have to do when you get your wet stone and have it unwrapped is submerge it in water for 5-10 minutes. While the stone is submerged you’ll notice that it is releasing bubbles. This is good sign that you got a wet stone. If it doesn’t release air bubbles when submerged then it is not a wet stone.

When you pull it out of the water don’t put it on a towel. It will suck the water right back out of the wet stone. We want to keep it wet and smooth. Generally it comes with a non slip base; you’ll want to place it in that if you have it. You can set this stone on just about anything once in its base. Just as log as it is flat and stable. I almost always use a counter top in the bathroom. Because then you can fill up the sink with water to keep the wet stone wet. When it drys out while sharpening the stone just dip your hand in water and rub it on the top. Make sure to leave a water layer on top. From here you’ll need your knife.

My knife was already sharp so I only did one side. Normally I would have started on the other side then flipped it to the light blue side. However when you decide that you are done wipe off your knife with a towel. Then wipe down your whetstone so each side is clean. Then pat your whetstone down with a towel when you are done.
