How to Shampoo a Client

Shampooing helps remove dirt, debris, odors, and even sweat. It is essential to follow the correct steps for shampooing. There is a vast variety of products that come along with shampooing to create and maintain clean hair. There are also many different ways and techniques; this method will give you great results!

Supplies

You will need the following materials for this tutorial:

-Shampoo (of your choice)

-Conditioner (of your choice)

-Waterproof cape

- 2 clean towels

-Clips

-Brush

- Rat tail comb

- Products (optional)

Client Consultation

Before you start, you will want to visualize the client's hair and scalp for dryness, oils, or even lice. To do this, you will want to take your rattail comb and go through sections of hair. Talk to your client about removing any jewelry to prevent it from getting caught or tarnished. Then, you will want to brush and section the hair and clip it up; this will keep the hair out of your way while doing the next steps.

Apply Towel

Place a towel lengthwise, take the two diagonal corners, and fold the towel in half, then cross and tuck the ends under the chin.

Apply Cape

Use a waterproof salon cape to secure over the towel and fasten it in the back. This will make sure it doesn't touch the skin of their neck.

Client Comfort

Make sure the client is comfortable with the draping. you always want to check and make sure it's not too tight on them before you proceed to the next step!

Talk to your client about their hair type and about what they struggle with and their hair needs. You can use this information to correctly select the right products, before you start.

Prepartation

The client should sit back in the chair with their shoulders and neck against the edge of the bowl. Their head should rest and they should feel comfortable throughout this process. Make sure they are close enough to the bowl so it doesn't lead to water running down their back.

Wetting the Hair

Start by testing the water temperatures on the inside of your wrist to make sure it's not too hot or cold. Communicate with your client so they are comfortable, Then you can resume the process. Make sure the hair is completely soaked. This will help the distribution of the shampoo

Apply Shampoo

Put a small amount of shampoo into your palms and rub them together to create suds, then apply it to the scalp!

Massage

You should start at the front of the head and work your way to the back. Use the pads of the fingers to massage in circular motions. Apply fingertip pressure along the hairline. Lastly, you should apply a sweeping motion from the front to the back with your fingers.

Rinse the Hair

Start at the scalp and work your way to the ends. Make sure you reach the back of the head and the neck. Do this until you have no suds.

Shampoo Twice

Repeat the process of wetting the hair, applying the shampoo, massage, and rinse. The second round of shampooing will give you a deeper clean by getting rid of the last of the residue left behind. This is a must for people with oily hair.

Apply Conditioner

You will want to start by gently squeezing out the water of the hair, then apply a small amount of conditioner to the mid-lengths of the hair. You do NOT want to apply it on the scalp, that will leave you with an oily greasy result. Leave it on the recommended time for the product.

Rinse the Hair

You will repeat the process of rinsing out the hair, but this time, you will want to use cool water to rinse the conditioner; you will have a smoother and shinier look. Rinse from the scalp downwards. You can even part the hair into sections to ensure you reach every area. Make sure all of the soap is out before you move on.

Towel Dry

When you are done rinsing, you want to squeeze the water out and use your second clean towel to dry until the hair isn't soaked.

Take the Client to Station

Take your client back to your station with the towel still on their head so there is no dripping water.

Dry and Style

Start by de-tangling; you can apply a leave-in conditioner for better results. Start at the bottom of the hair when brushing and work your way up. Blow dry the hair and ask the client which style they want.

Client Follow Up

Talk about maintenance and aftercare with the client. You can also recommend products you think would be good for their hair.

Clean Up

Place the tools in a closed container for disinfecting. Place the towel and cape in a closed container until it's time to get washed. Sweep up all the hair from the station. Clean the shampoo bowl. Remove the hair from the drain and disinfect the bowl and chair.
