Hello, dear readers! Do you sometimes have too much to carry and too little bags to help you out? Well here’s an idea: make one yourself! If you don't know how then you are absolutely perfect here! I am going to teach you how to sew a simple tote bag in a few quick steps, even if you have never sewed before!

Materials

Here's a list of materials you'll need for this project:

- Needle

- Thread (make sure that it fits the colour of your fabric)

- Fabric (2x 40cm for the main bag, 40cm for the handles)

- Scissors

- Ruler

- Safety pin

Measure and Cut!

First, you will need to measure and cut your fabric. It would be best if you use fabric that has the same colour rather than making the bag multi-coloured. For the bag that I made, I used 40 centimetres of fabric for the base and then 40 cm for the handles as well. If you want to make it bigger then you can, as these are just the sizes I am working with.

Prepare With the Needle and Thread!

Take the thread you want to use and cut a piece of it off. Then carefully fiddle it through the small hole in the back of the needle. Once that is done, pull the thread through, so that the thread is the same length on both sides. Hold the end of the thread between thumb and index finger, against the needle and wrap the thread around the sharp edge of the needle. Then pull the thread through all the way to the end, to make a knot.

Start Sewing

The stitch method I used was the backstitch which is one of the most popular stitches for sewing. The way it works is that you start by making a small stitch and then sting the needle into the end of that stitch, where you just pull the thread through. Make another stitch and repeat. The Backstitch should look like it's overlapping. Just continue doing that until you reach the end of the fabric.

If a knot appears in your sewing, then carefully pull the thread all the way through. Make sure to sew the two long sides and only one short side. Leave one small side open. Once you are finished sewing, turn the bag around.

Making the Handles

Measure 40 cm for the handles and cut the fabric. Then bend the fabric into two halves, horizontally. You can take a hot iron and go over the handles again, to make it stay together. Then, sew the fabric together at the edges. Once you are done with sewing the handles, attach a safety pin to the top of the fabric of the handles. Only attach the safety pin to one piece of the fabric, not both at the same time. Then push the safety pin through the middle of the fabric all the way to the end. If you're struggling, push the pin down first, then pull the fabric back and then continue doing that until the pin comes back out on the other side of the handle. Pull it out carefully and pull it all the way through until the fabric is turned over.

Next, you lay one side of the handle on the inside of the bag, 5 centimetres away from the edge. Then you sew it to the bag using the same method as beforehand. You do the same thing with the other handle.

Finishing Steps

Remember to turn the bag upside down, so that the stitches

Make sure that everything is well sewn together and then you are done! You can add decorations to your bag or anything you like!
