How to Sew Your Own Face Mask (6 EASY Steps! With Pictures)

Now more than ever, a personal face mask is an important item to have. In this tutorial, I will walk you through 6 easy steps on how to sew your own face mask!

1. Two pieces of cotton fabric 7" x 9.5"
2. One 1/8" piece of elastic cut to 13"
3. Scissors
4. Sewing machine

First, after you choose your fabric colors, cut the cotton fabric to 7" by 9.5" wide.

Cut your 13" elastic strip in half, so each piece is 6.5" long.

Place your fabric pieces right sides together, so that the pattern you want showing is facing together. Next, fold the fabric in half and round the outside lower corner with your scissors.

At the sewing machine, place an end of an elastic piece on the right-rounded side as shown. Stitch towards the rounded corner. Back stitch a few times over the elastic before continuing to sew until you reach the top corner of the mask, where you will reach inside the mask and tack down the other end of the elastic.

Back stitch a few times before pivoting the corner.

Sew across the top of the mask and pivot again. Tuck in the second elastic piece and back track across this elastic piece. Sew down to the rounded corner and fine the tail of the elastic piece; stitch that end in place at the rounded corner, backtacking a few times so that the elastic doesn't come out.

Sew about 1" more so that at the bottom of the mask, there is an opening in the middle of the mask. You will need an opening at the bottom of the mask so that you can flip the mask right-side out.

Turn the mask right-side out and pull the edges out.

Use an iron and press the fabric; be sure not to touch the elastic with the iron. The elastic will melt under the iron's heat.

Go back to the sewing machine and sew across the bottom of the mask to close the hole.

Next, make three 1/2" pleats on each side. Make the pleats as you top stitch around the edge of the mask.

Congratulations! You have made your very own mask. Be warned! This project is addicting, and once you make one, you will want to make more! This is a great present for family and friends.
