How to Set Up a Fishing Pole for Salt Water Fishing

Welcome and Purpose

Fishing is one of America's favorite past times. It is a source of entertainment as well as a way to catch food. It is important for everyone to know how to properly set up a fishing pole to fish, whether it be a youth just learning, or a first time adult. Today, I am going to ask you to follow the steps provided while setting up a fishing pole for salt water fishing. This type of fishing pole and instruments will be best used for bay fishing in a calm current. The goal is to see how simple or challenging you find the given instructions. I appreciate you testing this instruction set.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Your name will not be used or reported in the data collected from the evaluation.
  • This is not an assessment of you, but the instructions you have been given to follow.
  • Have fun!

Supplies:

The essential tools needed to perform this task include:

  1. Rod - at least six foot
  2. Reel - The line is already spooled through the reel
  3. Additional spool of fishing line
  4. Barrel Weight - one ounce
  5. Swivel
  6. Hook
  7. Clippers or scissors

Please complete each step in chronological order.

Locate Reel Seat

To locate the reel seat:

  1. Set the bottom of the rod in your lap.
  2. Locate the "lip" toward the bottom of the pole.
  3. Face it away from you.
  4. There will be a divot in the pole.
  5. You have found the reel seat.

Set the Reel to the Pole

To attach the reel to the pole:

  1. Place the back side of the reel into the divot.
  2. The handle of the reel will be to your right.
  3. Slide the reel into place.

Attach Your Reel to the Pole

  1. Find the black ring above the reel.
  2. Twist it to the left until snug.

Line Your Pole

The reel already has line spooled into it.

  1. Take the end of the line from the reel.
  2. Thread it through the bottom eye of the pole.
  3. Continue all the way to the top.
  4. Pull it back to you as you lay the pole in your lap so that you can continue.

Put on Barrel Weight

The barrel weight is the cylinder, silver weight

  1. Thread line through the eye of the weight.
  2. Pull line back to you.

Attach the Swivel

The swivel is the item with two rings connected by a joint.

  1. Thread the line through one of the swivel rings.
  2. Create a Fisherman's Knot to set it (See next step).

Tie a Fisherman's Knot

After threading line through a circle or eye:

  1. Pull the end of the line back toward the standing line about 3 inches.
  2. Twist 8 times.
  3. This will create a hole between the item and the twists.
  4. Thread the line through this hole.
  5. Tug each direction to create tension.
  6. You will see a hole in the final twist further from item.
  7. Thread line through this hole.
  8. Tug until line is tense.
  9. Tug the item and standing line.
  10. Knot will be created and moved to the item to set in place.
  11. Cut excess line with clippers or scissors.

Add a Leader Line

The leader line keeps the line from being frayed:

  1. Locate spool of line.
  2. Thread the end of the line through the other circle of the swivel.
  3. Look back at the last set of instructions to make a Fisherman's Knot.
  4. Measure about one foot from the swivel and cut the line.

Attach Hook at the End of Leader Line

  1. Thread line through the eye of the hook.
  2. Create Fisherman's Knot to set in place.
  3. Cut excess line.

You have now set up your fishing pole!

Attach your bait (worms, minnows, cut up fish, shrimp, etc.) and cast!
