I've made so many clay faces I have the process down to a science. I'm sharing it so you can too. heres some examples of my past work (for credibility)

Supplies

  1. tape
  2. newspaper
  3. clay
  4. (optional)sculpting tools

first you have to make a base. you can do this using balled up news paper and tape. try to make it vaguely head shaped, like an egg.

now cover it with a even (or as even as you can get it) layer. only cover the "front" of this base for easy removal

now draw out your guidelines in the clay. keep in mind the planes of the face. that means pay attention to the angles of the face and where they meet. I've drawn a guide onto some guys face to help you see it better, along with a more simple one off of a face. these guild lines will help you make sure your placement and proportions are all reasonable

now its time to build up the clay. it might help to look at someone elses or your own face for refrence. i reccomend keeping your lumps abstract at first, focusing on the forehead, cheekbones, chin, and lips, as those places have the most fat, which is what were sort of building right now.

now its time to refine those lumps! still useing those refrences, draw in and sculpt more details, like the line of the lips, mabye the hollows of the eyes, nostrils, ect. have fun with it, hes your homunculus, not mine

now the fun begins. what features should this face have? do you want a small nose or big one? big or small lips? what kind of eyes do you want? its all up to you!

you could make him a puppet, or give him big holes for eyes, or even big bulging ones, who knows!

now you can remove the base, be careful as to not break your creation.

and now you can really refine those details, get it just how you want and decorate it with glaze, paint, or whatever else you see fit

thats it!!! enjoy your little homunculus, and take good care of them. or smash it on the ground i guess. anyway hope you had fun.
