How to Remove Medical Exam Gloves

Now that I am dying leather, I've been wearing medical exam gloves that have become covered in dye. Taking them off without getting dye all over the place was an issue. It was an issue until I remembered my custodial training in blood-borne pathogen clean-up. There is a specific way to take off exam gloves so you don't contaminate your hands in the process. This Instructables details the process.

Supplies

For supplies, you will need:

  1. A pair of medical exam gloves. I have used this technique with latex, vinyl, and nitrile gloves. I have NOT used it with plastic gloves. The pink gloves in the Instructables are Beastek brand from Amazon. They are a little more expensive than other brands, but they hold up well to the leather dying chemicals (something I can't say for the latex gloves from Dollar Tree).

Put on a Pair of Gloves

Don a pair of gloves. This is just for practice. In the picture, I'm wearing a pair after I dip dyed a piece of leather using Fiebing's Pro Dye saddle tan. (See my dip-dying Instructables on that process.)

Pinch the Palm

Using your primary hand, pinch the glove in the palm area of your other hand.

Pull Off

Pull the glove up toward the fingers and remove it from your hand.

Crumple

Using just the fingers of your still-gloved hand, crumple the removed glove into your palm.

Insert Finger

Slide your free index finger underneath the cuff of the remaining glove. Rotate the index finger so it resembles a hook.

Peel Off the Glove

Using this hook, pull the remaining glove up toward the fingers. The crumpled glove should end up inside the this glove.

Properly Dispose

You now have one glove inside an inside-out glove. All contaminated surfaces are inside this protective cocoon. Dispose of it as needed (bio-hazard or sharps bin for medical, waste basket for leather dye).
