How to Properly Apply a Gait Belt

REMOVE AFTER EACH USE

WARNING: Inspect before each use. Check for broken stitches, parts, or buckles that are cracked or broken and do not hold securely. Before using, ensure the patient can safely wear a gait belt. A gait belt is designed to assist a patient and caregiver in ambulatory care and prevent falls. Below are step-by-step instructions for proper use.

Supplies

Gait belt of your facilities choosing

Greeting

Greet the patient to let them know what you are going to do.

Position

Position patient with feet flat on the floor.

Place

Place the belt around the patient's waist, just above the hips, over clothing but not any tubes or wires.

Adjust

Adjust the belt to ensure a sung proper fit by gently holding the middle of the belt while pulling the excess belt.

Lay

Lay your hand flat between the patient and the belt to ensure a comfortable fit.

**You should be able to slide your open hand (flat) between the belt and the patient to ensure proper fit.

Tuck

Tuck excess belt through the waistband, the flap should lay flat across the buckle.
