How to Prepare and Eat Raw Sugarcane!

You know the stuff that is put into coffee, sodas, juice, and pretty much anything else sweet? It’s sugar! This common substance brings us joy, but is often overlooked. The making of sugar is interesting. It is first harvested from a plant called sugarcane, which looks kind of like bamboo. The plant is taken to a factory, where it is squeezed and boiled. It then is cooled and broken down into little crystals, like the ones put into coffee! Today, I’ll be showing you how to prepare and eat the delectable treat called sugarcane! CAUTION: Take extreme caution and care when handling knife. It’s your choice whether to do this or not, and if injury does occur, no blame can be forced on me.

Paring Knife

Bowl

Raw Piece of Sugarcane

Cutting the Cane

First, You will need to cut the cane into segments. Use your paring knife tip to reach into the center of the cane, then turn the knife so that it cuts around the cane. Then, break the segment off the cane. Repeat until cane is fully divided into segments.

Next, cut the cane lengthwise from top to bottom. The best way to do this is straight down and through the the cane with a butcher’s knife or generally larger knife. Then, cut both halves in half. Do this the same way as when you cut the segments in half. Repeat this step carefully for each segment.

How to Eat Sugarcane!

To eat sugarcane, take small bites of each piece. Don’t eat the rind, and don’t swallow any of the sugarcane EVER. Chew on the inside, then spit out what’s left into a bowl or trash can.It should taste great! Thank you for reading and participating in my instruct-able!
