As the days get warmer
and the plants start to flourish, make plans to prepare your lawn for summer. Without proper preparation warm and dry temperatures can cause a lot of damage to your grass. Here are a few tips to keep your yard in great condition throughout the summer months.

Dethcathcing

The first step to
preparing your lawn for the summer is removing the thatch from your grass. Thatch is a layer between the soil and grass that consists of both living and dead blades of grass. A build-up of thatch blocks the sunlight, water and nutrients from reaching the soil preventing new healthy growth in our lawn. To remove this layer of thatch us a thatching rake to remove the dead material, once the thatch is loose, use a leaf rake to collect the material to discard.

Areating

The next step in getting
your lawn ready for the summer months is aerating. Aerating punches the soil with small holes which allows water and air to reach the roots. Allowing these nutrients to reach the soil makes for a much healthier and vibrant lawn. To do this use a lawn aerator to make multiple passes over your lawn leaving the plugs out. Once the plugs from your lawn are dry you can run them over with a mower or rake.

Reseeding

The
third step is to reseed the bare patches in your lawn. Reseeding will eliminate the dead patches of grass in your lawn giving it a more universal look. To reseeds your lawn, start by removing the dead grass in the bare spots of your lawn. Once the dead grass is removed make sure the soil is level and apply your choice of seed. Once seeded apply a healthy amount of water daily until grass is grown.
