How to Polish a Chrome Grill
Video tutorial on how to polish a chrome grill. This is a chrome coated plastic grill, so it doesn’t tend to be a durable as compared to metal bases grill. However there is no risk of rusting, but there can be surface imperfections such a chipping, pealing, or dimpling which can only be repaired by either having the grill re-chromed or replaced. This process will help remove any mild scratching, staining, water spots, bug splatters, etc. This particular vehicle I am working with here is a 1998 Ford Ranger. The process can be applied to other types of chrome coated plastic trim such as around windows, door handles, emblems, rub strips, fender trim, wheel covers, center caps, etc.
Tools/Supplies Needed:
- microfiber cloth
- chrome specific polish
- tape
- bucket of water with soap
- hose

First ensure the surface has been washed to remove the chance of contamination which my jeopardize the polishing process.
For this I am using a chrome polishing product made by Mothers, along with a clean microfiber cloth. Shake the product and then apply a desired amount into the microfiber cloth.
Work the product into the surface. Just like paint, the chrome surface is exposed to various debris which can be baked on the surface. I would only recommend a chrome specific polish as it has a very fine grit for polishing which will not damage the surface, especially for this chrome coated plastic.
Apply more product if needed. Depending on your vehicle’s design you can apply take to adjacent non chrome areas so the polish does not get on the surface. Once satisfied, allow the product to haze over on the surface. Flip the microfiber cloth over to a clean section and give the surface a final buff.
Finally you’ll be left with something such as this. As you can see the shine and clarity has greatly increase compared to what it looked like before. This chrome polish will protect the chrome to a certain amount, but to further help repel dirt and debris, you can apply a wax or sealing too.
