How to Polish Epoxy Resin and Wood

)
In this Instructable, learn how to polish epoxy resin like a pro. From sanding to buffing, I show you how to achieve a smooth and glossy surface that will make your creations shine.
Epoxy resin is a versatile and durable material that can be used in a wide variety of DIY projects, such as jewelry making, woodworking, wood repair, and home decor. However, achieving a perfect finish on epoxy resin can be challenging and frustrating. Especially if you are new to working with this material.
There are several things which are difficult to fully explain with words and images, so be sure to check out the video tutorial above. The sanding and polishing of this project starts at 3:50 in the video.
Supplies
To polish epoxy resin, you'll need some basic tools and materials.
The tools and material I use to sand and polish epoxy resin comprise a system. While this system isn’t necessary to achieve great results, it does allow me to sand and polish epoxy resin with a single system.
Sand Surface

The first step to polish epoxy resin is sanding resin with coarse sandpaper to remove any imperfections, bumps, or uneven spots. Start with a grit of around 120 or 150 and sand the resin gently, using a circular motion.
Make sure to sand evenly and avoid applying too much pressure, as this can create new scratches or damage the resin.
Once you’ve sanded the entire surface with coarse sandpaper, switch to a finer grit, such as 320 or 400, and repeat the process. This will help to smooth out the surface and remove any scratches left by the previous grit.
Keep sanding with progressively finer grits until you reach a 320 grit or 1500 grit. The lower the grit, the lower the finished gloss. The higher the grit, the higher the finished gloss.
Keep Sandpaper Clean

Be sure to keep your sandpaper clean to avoid burning the resin with too much heat. I use a air compressor to remove the resin on the sandpaper.
Clean the Surface

After sanding, wash the resin with a damp rag to remove any dust or debris. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean microfiber cloth or a hair dryer.
Make sure that the resin is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
Apply Polishing Compound

Now it’s time to apply the polishing compound to the resin. You can use a polishing cloth, a buffing pad, or a buffing wheel, depending on your preference.
Apply a small amount of polishing compound to the surface of the resin and spread it evenly with the cloth or the pad.
Start buffing the resin with the buffing wheel, using a low speed at first to avoid splattering the compound. Move the wheel in circular motions and apply gentle pressure.
Gradually increase the speed and pressure as you buff, but be careful not to overheat the resin or damage it.
Buff and Finish

Continue buffing the resin with the polishing compound until you achieve the desired level of shine and smoothness. You may need to apply more polishing compound or switch to a finer compound, depending on the condition of the resin.
I used a sheepskin pad on my sander to buff the polish off the resin. This removes the polish and leaves a nice shine. You can also do this by hand with a microfiber cloth.
Maintenance and Care

Once you’ve achieved a flawless finish on your epoxy resin project, it’s important to take proper care of it to ensure that it stays looking its best. Here are a few tips for maintaining and caring for your polished epoxy resin:
- Avoid exposing your epoxy resin to direct sunlight or heat, as this can cause it to fade or become discolored.
- Use a soft cloth or microfiber towel to clean the surface of the epoxy resin regularly.
- Apply a wax-based polish every few months to maintain the protective layer on the surface of the epoxy resin.
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners or tools on your polished epoxy resin, as this can scratch or damage the surface.
