How to Patch a Hole in Pants
Did you rip your pants and do not want to pay for more pants? Well you came to the right place
Hazard: Be Careful working with threading needles, and with where you place the needle after you finish your work. Do this work on a clean space, as you do not want to lose the needle. Do not do this if you are not already familiar with sewing, or older than 18. If you are younger, ask an adult to help.
Supplies
Pants with a hole, Old pants with similar material and color, Threading Needle, Thread with similar color, Fabric Glue, Thimble, and Scissors
Cleaning Hole
Clean the hole on the pants for any extra threads sticking out while trying to not make the hole any bigger.
Flipping Pants Inside Out
Flip the pants you plan to patch inside out as patching the pants from the inside will make the patching look cleaner.
Making a Patch
Take your old pants and create a shape similar and slightly bigger than the hole. Also clean up the patch if there is to much rough edges.
Threading the Needle
Acquire your needle and threading you plan to use and proceed to put the thread through the needle. Tie a knot so the thread does not slip out.
Place Patch Over Hole
Grab the patch you made from the other pants and place it on top of the hole you want to patch.
Mark Patch
Mark the patch with either a color pencil or pen to know how far to go when patching.
Pin Down
Place safety pins in the patch and pants to help hold the patch to the pants when sewing
Roll Pant Legs
Roll pant leg up to the patch so you have less of a distance when putting your hands under the patch with a thimble.
Start Sewing
Since the pants are inside out, you are going to do what is an upside down backstitch. First you are going to push the needle through the top of the pants. Make sure to leave about two inches of slack. After you make the second hole, make sure you put the string taut, but don’t pull too hard as you could break the thread. Then you are going to put the thread upward through the cloth about half an inch away from the initial point. After this, you are going to put the needle back down through the pants another half inch from the second point.
Looping
This is when you are going to loop back around, and push back up through the material at the second point.
The pattern starts now, as you are going to continuously go forward half an inch, and while the thread is on the inside of the pants, you will track back to the previous “starting” point. The pattern should look like the picture above:
Repeat
Proceed to repeat step 9 and 10 all the way around the patch
Tie Knot
Lastly you will tie the slack you left at the beginning to the end of the thread.
Excess
After tying the knot cut any excess thread to keep it looking clean
Fabric Glue
Apply glue to any fabric that may peel from the stiches and make the stiches week
Conclusion
Always make sure to be careful around sharp objects and good luck on your sewing endeavors.
