If you have never had a great martini, you do not know what you are missing.  It's a simple, elegant and refreshing drink any time of year.

You will need:

cocktail shaker
ice
stemmed glass
vodka or gin
dry vermouth
garnish of choice, such as olive or lemon twist

Step 1

Fill cocktail shaker with ice.

Step 2

Pour four jiggers of vodka or gin into the cocktail shaker with ice.  You will want a good quality liquor.  The finished product will be worth the added expense.

Step 3

Add a gentle splash of dry vermouth to the cocktail shaker with the ice and vodka.  The key to a really great martini is to add just the right amount of vermouth.  You do not want too much, nor too little.  It is always best to err on the side of too little.

Step 4

Place top on cocktail shaker.  Make sure you keep one hand on the top of the shaker and one hand on the bottom, and shake vigorously in a back and forth motion for about 15-20 seconds.

Let stand for 30 seconds.

Step 5

While standing, place desired garnish in the martini glass.  Remove the very top of the shaker, leaving the piece with the strainer over the top.  This will allow only the liquid to pour out, leaving the ice in the shaker.  Holding the shaker carefully so the top does not come off, pour the martini into the glass.

Sit back and enjoy!
