Restaurants and Moms’ kitchens aren’t the only places where delicious omelets are found. With the right direction along with a little practice, anyone can make a great omelet! This includes the ingredients needed as well as all the steps to making a delicious omelet right in your own kitchen.

Prepping

The first step to making a delectable omelet is to gather the ingredients. Technically speaking, an omelet only needs to contain eggs, but a delicious omelet contains so much more. Some ideas of fillings for an omelet includes cheese, ham, bell peppers, mushrooms, green onions, and Roma tomatoes. The filling for an omelet is the most important in creating something good, but any filling can be changed out depending on personal preference. It’s important to have all these ingredients prepped before you begin cooking the egg. The cheese should be shredded, but all other fillings should be diced into approximately one-half-inch cubes before continuing to the next stage.

Cook the Egg

Next, the most difficult part, cook the egg. This step is so important that it must be broken down into sub-steps. I always let my pan warm up while I am mixing the eggs. For a three-egg omelet, an eight-inch pan is the perfect size. Set the burner temperature to medium-low heat. If it is too hot, your omelets will be super runny on the inside but burnt on the outside. Drizzle some oil onto the pan and let it sit on the burner for a minute to preheat. While the pan is warming up, whisk the eggs. Mix a splash of heavy cream into your eggs—approximately two tablespoons worth. Then once everything is mixed and the pan is warm, pour the mixture onto the pan. Be patient with this portion. Many people become impatient and start checking the eggs too soon. If checked too soon, what should have been a beautiful omelet results in a pile of scrambled eggs. Looking at the eggs, one can tell when they are starting to be cooked. When the bottom is starting to become more firm—it becomes darker yellow and more opaque, but the top is still somewhat runny—start adding the ingredients to your omelet.

Add Fillings and Fold

When filling the omelet, begin with the cheese. Sprinkle a handful of cheese over the entire pan of eggs. Then add ham and the rest of your ingredients to one half. Use a spatula and start carefully sliding it around the edges of the entire egg. Keep sliding the spatula further under one half of the omelet until it’s able to be flipped over to fold the omelet in half. Sprinkle more cheese on the top and maybe a few sliced green onions. Use a spatula to scoop the rest of the omelet out and slide it onto a plate. Once the technique is perfected, the options are endless when considering what all to include in a delicious omelet.
