How to Make an Easy Vogue Dress

Making a dress may seem like a difficult task, but even with minimal sewing experience, it's easy!

I chose to use the very easy dress pattern by Vogue and altered it by not adding pockets. This pattern required me to use satin. I chose to use black satin for the bodice and a blush pink satin for the skirt.

Materials I used were:

• Easy Vogue dress pattern
• 22-inch black zipper
• 2 yards of black satin (Bodice)
• 3 yards of pink satin (Skirt)
• Fabric scissors
• Sewing machine (Brother XL 3200)
• Seam ripper
• Black thread
• Ruler
• Pins
• Extra sewing needles
• Pencil
• Lighter
• Band-aids (I encountered a lot of issues with the pins)

This step is just as easy as it sounds, simply cut out the patterns in your desired size and pin to the material. After this, cut and add a small seam allowance.

In this step, make sure to pin the fabric together so it's good side to good side. This will hide the seam when you flip it right side out.

The same rules from step three apply here.

This step makes the bodice look more cohesive and finished.

I started off by, once again, cutting out the pattern and pinning it to the fabric.

This step is very important to sew and pin it like in the picture! Otherwise, it will not hide the seams and the seam ripper will become your best friend.

This step simply makes it look more finished.

Start by pinning the bodice to the skirt. Make sure that this lines up! When everything looks good, sew it together.

For this step, I tried on the dress and marked where it needed to be taken in. I ended up taking off a lot of extra fabric.

This is important to do before sewing on the zipper.

Here, I pinned one side of the zipper to the dress and stitched it. Then, I repeated on the other side.

For this step, I lined up the edge of the skirt, turned it inside out, pinned it, and stitched it.

For the straps, I cut two strips of black fabric (14 inches long and 1 inch wide) and pinned them to the front and back of the dress. To prevent the fabric from fraying, I burnt the edges with a lighter. This technique is used by ballet dancers to prevent their pointe shoe ribbons from fraying when they are sewed to the shoe.

This makes the dress look professional and finished.

After this, you can wear your dress around anywhere. I would recommend trying to make this dress, especially if you have a special event coming up. *Warning* This did take many hours to complete, so it isn't a project you can rush. Happy sewing!
