How to Make an Arbor With EMT Conduit

IMG_0903 (2).JPG

I made an arbor, for a rose bush that was needing support. I did some arbor shopping, and found a few things that I liked, but not any that were exactly what I wanted, or the price I wanted to pay.

I decided to make an arbor out of EMT conduit, because I think it is easy to work with, strong, weather resistant, and it doesn't cost too much.

As always, thanks for viewing and enjoy.

Tools and Materials

On this project I used:

(12) 60" pieces of 3/4" EMT conduit

(12) 23" pieces of 3/8" threaded rod

(36) 3/8" nuts, (36) 3/8" lock washers

(48) 3/8" washers and (4) 24" pieces of 1/2" rebar.

(6) 3/4" rebar connectors

I used a hacksaw to cut the conduit and rebar. A drill to drill the holes. A screwdriver for the connectors. A wrench for the 3/8" nuts. The only specialty tool I used was the conduit bender, to make the radius bends in the conduit.

I bought my conduit in 60" pieces. The uprights and top radius pieces I left at 60". That way I didn't have to cut them at all. The cross pieces I cut 20" long. I drilled the holes on the front pieces of the arbor and then, to make sure the back holes matched the front holes, I transfer drilled the holes from front to back.

The (4) front pieces and (4) back pieces are connected together with conduit connectors. You just insert the conduit into the connectors and then tighten the screws. For assembling the cross pieces I used threaded rod with a nut then lock washer then flat washer then the front piece, another flat washer, another lock washer, and another nut. Pass the cross piece of conduit over the threaded rod then add a flat washer, the back piece then a flat washer, a lock washer and a nut. Once you have it all together and in position, drive the pieces of rebar into the ground and put the legs of the arbor over the rebar, to help hold it in place.

I made a video of the steps and finished project to help you understand how I made my arbor to hopefully help you make one the same or give you ideas to make a custom arbor of your own.

Thanks for watching.
