How to Make an Apple Berry Summer Fruit Crumble
It’s coming to the end of berry picking season now. It’s such a ‘bring the family together’ thing to do, I absolutely love it! This year was very special as it brought 3 generations together and was the first time my 2yr old daughter has done it. Safe to say she loved it and actually picked them off herself exclaiming, “Mmmm! They’re like sweeties!” So long as she believes that I’m not going to tell her otherwise!
You can make mountains of various things with your fruity treasures but, in my family, it always has to be a Summer Fruit Crumble. Gorgeous, ripe & delicious fruits topped with a crunchy, buttery crumble. Serve it with some ice cream or custard and you really can’t go far wrong with this delightful pud!
Here is what you will need to make your very own.
(Serves 6-8)
- 250g Blackberries, Washed
- 110g Raspberries, Washed
- 200g Green Apple, Peeled, Cored & Chopped
- 1 tbsp Golden Caster Sugar
- 1 tbsp Water
- 85g Unsalted Butter, Cold
- 140g Plain Flour
- Pinch of Salt
- 50g Golden Caster Sugar
- Extra Golden Caster Sugar, for Sprinkling
Essential Equipment
- Ovenproof Dish (Mine is 22 x 15 x 5 cm Oval)
Preparing the Fruit
First preheat your oven to 190°C/Fan 180°C and grease the sides of your ovenproof dish.
If you haven’t already, wash the berries and prepare the apple. Then tip the blackberries, raspberries & apple into your prepared dish and add in the sugar & water. Give it a really good mix.
How to Make the Crumble
To make the crumble, put the butter, flour, salt & sugar into a large bowl. (Note: you will have an easier job if you cube your butter a little smaller than mine! I was in a bit of a rush when I made this.)

Then rub lightly between your forefingers and thumbs until you get a light crumble.
Don’t worry too much if there are a few big bits of butter left but if you cubed your butter smaller than mine, like I mentioned before, you should be fine anyway!
Gran's Top Tip
Scatter the crumble over the top of the fruit.
Finally, a top tip from my Gran. (You may remember her from such posts as Gran’s Incredible Ham & Cheese Quiche.) Scatter about 1/2 to 1 tbsp of extra sugar over the top. This makes it really nice and crispy!
The Bake
Then finally place on a baking tray (just in case the fruit bubbles over) and bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the fruit is bubbling and the crumble is golden & crunchy.
It really makes you want to go out and pick your own doesn’t it?! We had such a fun day out foraging with family. To go home with a bag of free food and the promise of a beautiful Summer Fruit Crumble though?! That makes it all the more wonderful! It’s literally like Summer in a pudding. (Which will make you feel better even when the weather starts turning colder!) Beautiful sweet Summer fruits with a gorgeously moreish buttery crumble… I mean seriously, what more do you need in life??
