How to Make a "Straw" Hat
Hello there! We're writing to you from Denver, Colorado at 10:40 at night because we wanted to enter the Silly Hat Contest. Here is our best (albeit rushed) effort!
Supplies
First thing we need is Supplies! For this you'll only need three things:
- Cardstock (or normal paper)
- Duct Tape
- And T̶u̶r̶t̶l̶e̶ ̶F̶o̶o̶d̶ Bendy Straws!
I've got 10% battery left on my laptop, so let's get started! (Talk about throwing in the hat last minute)
Measure Your Noggin!
First thing we gotta do is make sure the hat fits!
Take the card-stock and wrap it around your cranium. Get a friend to help you mark the circumference with a pencil. Then use a straw to mark the height of the hat. Repeat this all along the length of the card-stock, leaving marks for cutting in the next step.
Note: Make sure to leave the bendy part off of the paper! Only use the long end of the straw to measure the hat height.
Chop and Stick
Time for cutting! Mind the scissors, they will be sharp! Cut the strip of paper along the lines you've drawn.
After the length of paper is cut, connect them together with a small strip of duct tape.
Then, very carefully, wrap a strip of duct-tape sticky-side-out around the cylinder you just made.
Onto the straws!
This Step Sucks...
Let's attach the straws! Line up the long end of the straw with the "top" of the hat. Press it down on the duct tape.
Be careful not to leave gaps!
Continue this process all the way around the tube, until your hat is completely covered in straws.
Once the entire hat is covered in straws, carefully stretch the bendy end of all the straws, and angle them outwards to form the hat's brim!
Hatters Gonna Hat!
And it's done! You have successfully made your very own straw hat!
(and I can successfully shutoff my computer and go to sleep now)
I hope you enjoyed this Instructable, hats off to you for finishing it! (And thanks for bearing with all of the hat puns)
Remember: This Instructable was created for the Silly Hat Contest, so if you enjoyed it, go give it a vote!
Thanks, see you in the next project :)
