How to Make a Star Wars Hat

This tutorial is for 2 crochet hat patterns - a his & hers version of the hat. The materials and techniques are the same for both patterns with a few variations in her version. In her version, you will be skipping the TIE fighter between the two Stormtroopers, the space between the two Stormtroopers is 14sts, instead of 22sts, and the edge of the hat has a ribbing. The instructions for the pattern come with a pixel chart for each version. Enjoy!

MATERIALS

• Cascade 220 Solids (100g/200m/220yds)
• Colour A: 1 ball in Navy (color #8393)
• Colour B: 1 ball in White (color #8505)
• 4.25mm crochet hookTapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS (US Terminology)

• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet
• st (s) = stitch (es)
• sl st = slip stitch
• rnd = round

GAUGE

• His: 5sts x 4rows = 1”x 1” square using the rib stitch technique.
• Hers: 4.5sts x 4rows = 1”x 1” square using the rib stitch technique.

MEASUREMENTS

• His: Final size measures 57cm/ 22.5” (circumference) x 21.5cm/8.5” (length)
• Hers: Final size (after blocking) measures 50cm/ 19.7” (circumference) x 24cm/9.5” (length with a folded ribbed edge)

TECHNIQUES

Rib Stitch: worked the same as a single crochet stitch, except instead of inserting the hook into both stitches, insert the hook into the back loop only. We’ve got a step by step tutorial in our stitch academy post from last week.

Changing colours: On the last stitch of colour A you’ll have 2 sts left on the hook. Pull colour B through both loops and crochet the next st using colour B. Continue working in colour B until it’s time to change back to colour A. Repeat the same steps.

Sc2tog: single crochet two together. Insert the hook in the first st, yarn over, draw up a loop, you now have 2 loops on the hook. With the two sts on the hook, insert the hook into the next st, yarn over, draw up a loop, with 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw the yarn through all three loops on the hook.

PATTERN NOTES:

This hat is crocheted in the round, starting at the band and finishing at the crown (bottom up method). If you’d like to increase the size of the hat based on your own measurements, wrap a measuring tape around your head resting it in the middle of your forehead. This will give you the exact size you’ll need. Use this circumference and the gauge information to adjust the size of the hat.

Please note: the white squares represent colour A, and the blue squares represent colour B. Each box represents 1sc st.

To begin, ch111 using colour A, join in the round with a sl st.

Rnd1: continuing with colour A, work sc in the back loop only (rib stitch) until you reach the last st, ch1.

Pattern begins, read the chart from right to left

Rnd 2 – 18: Using sc in the back loop only, repeat the pattern for a total of 3 times. That means you will have a total of 3 Stromtroopers, and 3 TIE Fighters.

Rnd 19: Continue working in pattern while at the same time beginning a repeat of Rnds 2-18. Continue working in pattern for a total of 39 ends.

Assembling
Rnd 39: bind off, leaving an 8” tail for sewing. Using a tapestry needle, pull the 8” tail through all the sts and tug on the yarn to close up the loop. Add a pom-pom or leave it plain, weave in loose ends and you’re done.

To begin, ch87, join in the round with a sl st.

Pattern begins, read the chart from right to left

Rnd 2 – 21: Using sc in the back loop only, repeat the pattern for a total of 3 times.

Rnd 22 (decrease begins): *1sc in back loop only in the next 4ch spaces, sc2tog* repeat from * to end, 1sc in the last 3 sts.

Rnd 23 – 25: 1sc in the back loop only across to the end

Rnd 26: *1sc in back loop only in the next 4ch spaces, sc2tog* repeat from * to end, 1sc in the last st.

Rnd 27-29: repeat rnd 23, bind off.

Assembling:

Using a tapestry needle, pull the 8” tail through all the sts and tug on the yarn to close up the loop. Weave in loose ends.

Using colour A, and the same crochet hook, attach yarn anywhere along the bottom of the hat.

Ch30 (or a chain that is the height of your desired ribbing, plus 1 extra ch).

Row 1: working in the back loop only, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook to the end of the chain. When you reach the end (i.e. the hat) sl st in the next 2sts on the hat.

Row 2: Turn, 1 sc in the back loop only in each sc across ribbing (29sts in total)

Row 3: ch1, turn, sc in the back loops only across to the end. When you reach the end (i.e. the hat) sl st in the next 2sts on the hat.

Repeat rows 2-3 until you’ve gone around the entire circumference of the hat.

Finish off the hat by slip stitching the first and last rows of the ribbing together.
