How to Make a Sonic Themed Escape Room! (Part 1)
I'm gonna show you how to make a Sonic themed escape room!
Before you read on I'd like to tell you that this took me a while to make and put together the steps and how the escape room will work, so please cosider that when you look at how to make this. Now you know that let's move on!
Alright, so my brothers birthday is coming up and I wanted to surprise them with something super cool. Lately they've been obsessed with playing Sonic games and watching the Sonic and Sonic 2 movies over and over again, so I thought I'd make them something Sonic themed. And since they love escape rooms, I thought I make the a Sonic themed one! Also unlike normal escape rooms, the goal isn't to escape the room, but to find/unlock all the chaos emeralds. The room is also split up into three sections, Tails area, Knuckles area, and Sonic's area.
So that's exactly what I did, and here's how you can make it too!
Also be sure to let me know if you have any questions!
Supplies
Okay, so here's all the supplies I used, if you don't have some of the supplies feel free to use your closes alternatives. These are just the ones I used, but if you have one that you think would work better let me know and have fun using it. Be sure to check out how they are used in their steps below before switching them though. All supplies go with their picture above. (If one of the supplies below has a * then that means it's just for decoration and will be perfectly fine switching to an alternative if you chose not to use it) (Colors as well are optional but the ones I chose go specifically with the theme)

Making the Sonic Remote Control Car
For the escape room your gonna need a remote control car. So here's how to make it Sonic themed. This is a completely optional step and just adds to the theme of the room.
So here's how (in order from pictures above):
- First you're gonna want to cover all the windows, headlights, and wheels on the car with masking tape.
- Then you can add your first coat of blue paint.
- You can keep adding as many coats as you want until it looks right, I added 5.
- Once it's completely dry you can remove the masking tape.
- And finally coat with a 1 or 2 coatings of modge podge.
Layout
Next after collecting supplies is the layout. Which basically means putting the supplies where they go. So here's where everything is put. (This escape room was made in a guest bedroom, so you'll have to adjust it to the room you do it in because all rooms are different.)
The Layout (in order of pictures above):
- Set the first blue blanket on the bed, so it covers it like the first picture.
- Place the Sonic and Sonic 2 movies on the middle back of the bed against the wall like the picture.
- Place the computer on the desk. (you can choose to leave it open or closed when the escape room begins, personally I'll leave mine open because the background goes to the theme)
- Next put the four Sonic mini posters on the wall above the bed.
- Put the Sonic Forces game against the wall in between the movies.
- Put the blue yoga mat against wall in between drawers and bed.
- Put the other blue blanket on the drawers.
- Put the blue metalic balloon somewhere on the floor by the bed.
- Put the blue stuffed animal on the left of the bed by the wall.
- Put one of the blue D-ring clips on top of the blue blanket on the drawers, and put the other through the side of the blue box.
- Place the red D-ring clip on the bookshelf.
- Turn the LED light strip on blue.
- Here's where the "Chaos Emeralds" or flat glass marbles will go: one in the clear container, one in the yellow box, one on the first K'nex conveyor belt (you can see how to make the conveyor belt in the step below), one taped to the inside bottom of the remote control car, one on the second K'nex conveyor belt, one in the pencil case, and you'll give the last one to them once all the power rings are collected (basically once they're all placed on the keychain outlines on the piece of cardboard)
- Put the piece of cardboard with the keychain outlines on the front center of the bed.
- Here's where the "Power Rings" or keychain rings will go: one on the first outline of cardboard piece on the bed / and put two lines on the keychain rings with sharpie, you'll give them one once they put the keychains together on the wall in the right order / and put five lines on the keychain ring with sharpie, one goes in the yellow box / and put seven lines on the keychain ring with sharpie, one goes in the red box / and put eight lines on the keychain ring with sharpie, and the last one goes in the bottom cup in the stack of cups / and put three lines on the keychain ring with sharpie
- Put a key lock on the red box and set it on the floor somewhere in "Knuckles area".
- Put one of the D-ring clips on the blue box and put a key lock on it
- Put "Master Emerald" in the treasure chest
- Print out the Sonic and Tails coloring page and put it on a desk
- Put the remote control car in the clear container and unscrew the back and put the screws on the desk and put the control for the car on the desk
- Put blue and yellow waffle blocks up like a cage
- Put the strings of blue beads on the wall above the bed in this order: 2, 5, 7
- Put the blue mini hairbrush on the drawers with blanket
- Put the blue notebook / journal on the desk
- Hang the blue ceiling fan decorations on the ceiling
- Put the sonic quill on the desk
- Put the white board on the back of the bigger desk
- Put the pencil case on the bigger desk
- Put the blue glass bird on the blue box
- Put the blue teacup toy on the drawers with blanket
- Put the drawing / drawings of Sonic on wall around sonic's area
This is part #1 of how to make the Sonic Escape Room, I'll post the rest in a different instructable for a part #2.
