How to Make a Simple Wooden Jewelry Box

Make a simple but elegant jewelry box with no fasteners and no complicated joinery. All you really need is a tablesaw unless you want to mill your own wood. The friction fit top is a great clean look.

Materials:

• 3′ x 3-1/2″ x 3/8″ maple
• 28″ x 2″ x 3/16″ walnut
• 20″ x 4-1/2″ x 1/4″ walnut

The sides of the box are 3-1/8" wide and 3/8" thick. The long sides will be 10" and the short sides 5". Cut the wood to rough length and exact width. I used a bandsaw to split the maple board into 2 side parts.

The top and bottom panels final dimensions will be 9-1/2" x 4-1/2" and will be 1/4" thick. You can use plywood or make your own panels like I did.

The last picture shows material for 2 boxes.

Cut 1/4" wide grooves, 3/16" deep along the edge of each side. The grooves should be 3/16" from the outer edge. Use a scrap piece of wood to setup the grooves and test the fit with the panels.

Cut the sides to final length, putting mites on each edge. When complete you should have the boards shown in the final pick. 2 long sides at 10", 2 short sides at 5" and 2 panels at 9-1/2" x 4-1/2".

Use blue painters tape to hold all the sides together and then glue up the box, inserting the top and bottom panels in the grooves.

After the glue is dry, part (cut off) the top from the box. Set the saw fence to 3/4" and make a pass on the short edges first then the long edges. Use spacers as shown in the video to support the lid. Sand any burning off the lid with sandpaper.

Cut inner liner pieces to 2" wide and fit the pieces inside the box on the short end first and then the long sides. Cut each piece to fit in the box snugly. Glue the pieces in with wood glue and clamp in place.

Apply a finish of your choice to the box. I used shellac seal coat to highlight the figure in the wood.
