How to Make a Seismograph

Sup! pretty new to this. This is like the "where the pandemic has led me to" sort of a thing, where u just explore the internet to learn more and help others as well. So today I thought to myself how about I try this site called Instructables.. and so I did.

Ok so let's get into the making of the Seismograph: an instrument that measures and records details of earthquakes, such as force and duration(totally didn't google that)

Supplies

  • Wooden Reapers:- 2metres would do (not this though .. just thin wooden strips used for packaging and can be cut easily)
  • Binder Clip:- 1
  • Poly Bag
  • Nylon String(recommended)/any thread:1metre
  • Sewing Thread
  • Super Glue
  • Sketch pen
  • Nuts: 2 (should be bigger than the ones used for cycle wheels)
  • Thin Cardboard Sheet: 30x30 cm
  • A4 Paper
  • Metal Hanger

Framework(Wooden Reaper)

  1. (x1) 30cm
  2. (x1) 20cm
  3. (x7) 6cm

After you cut the following, glue them as shown in the first image

Note: As shown in the second image u must create a small space to fit the 30cm piece so that it stays in place better

Then, take three 6cm pieces and stick them together as shown in the third image (this is to make sure that they hold the nut without falling apart). Once that's dried, drill a hole at half a cm from the point towards you and the centre of the piece width-wise as shown in the fourth image.

Now, glue the piece to the top end of the 30 cm piece as shown in the fifth and sixth images.

Draw two circles on cardboard with a radius of 3cm.

Then, cut the cardboard as a rectangle of length -> 16cm and then wrap it around the two circles one by one and glue them as shown in the second image.

Now cut the portion of the metal hanger that is circled in the third image and pass it through the centre of both the circles

Note: Make sure that one end is longer than the other to make the crankshaft

Place two 6cm pieces one on top of another (don't glue them) and drill a hole.. image

Now place one on each side of the cylinder as shown in the fifth image and carefully replicate the shape of the metal in the fifth image using long pliers.

Finally, glue the cylinder as shown in the sixth image

Hehe, Last Step!!

Take an A4 paper and take 4cm as its width and cut it length-wise

Then, roll it around a piece of sketch pen that'll be used to draw the reading

After that put some super glue around the edges to increase strength and tape two nuts of the same kind on opposite sides as shown in the third image. Also, make sure that the pen still fits.

Now, punch a hole on either side of the paper as shown in the fourth image and pass the nylon thread through the two holes as shown in the fifth image and then pass the two ends of the thread into the hole we made in the top-end piece as shown in the sixth image.

Then cut the polybag in the same way as that of the A4 paper and fold it in half and make a small triangle as shown in the image and place the pen with the paper into the triangular hole (this is to ensure that the pen moves in only one axis)

Finally, u can keep the plastic in place by clipping a binder clip up top as shown in the ninth image.

Less GO!!

Hope u enjoyed this project as much as I did
