In this instructable, you will learn how to create a scale model of the Solar System.

Supplies

  1. any kind of laptop
  2. google sheet
  3. Tinkercad

Creating a Google Sheet

First I created a google sheet with all the information you need. I search up the sizes of each planet and convert them to ratios with the Earth and also make it so that I am able to change the scale of each planet to the ratio I want so that it is able to fit into the Tinkercad.

Changing the Setting in Tinkercad

In Tinkercad, go to settings and set the width and the length to 1000. So that it is big enough to fit the sun and the other planets.

Making the and the Planet

Drag out a sphere, we will make this the sun. Scale the sun so that it matches the scaled diameter of the google sheet. Make sure that it is the same length on each 3 sides. Which I have is 151.05. Do this for every planet.

Locating the Sun and the Planet

Drag the Sun so that it is (0,0) on the Tinkercad grid. For the planet drag them to the (x,x) where x is the scaled distance from the sun which you have on the google sheet. For example, in the second picture, which is mercury, have a scaled distance of 0.39 so I drag this planet to (0.39,0.39). Do this for the rest of the planet.

For the color of each planet and the sun I searched up online. I used the Hex # color of the color and type it into the color selection of each sphere. I used the Ring shape for the planet who needs rings and I shape it so that it look flatter and I turn it transparent in the color setting. Then I color the rings that match each planet.

Changing the Background

At the end got to the setting and changed the background to a really dark blue color and close the show grid section to make it look more like space.
