How to Make a Rainbow of Fruit With Tinkercad

Fruits and the variety of colors they come in are a crazy concept. They can range from the brightest of reds to the darkest of purples. This tutorial will give you a taste (see what I did there?) of the color variation nature provides us with step by step instructions on how to create a fruit from each color of the standard six color rainbow!

For this project, you'll only need a Tinkercad account, which you can make for free using an email, Apple, Microsoft, or Facebook account.

The first fruit we're going to be creating on our journey through the fruit rainbow is the red apple. Start by dragging the "HD Torus" shape, found under the "Shape Generators" tab under the "All" section, to your workplane.

To shape the base to look more like an apple, slide the "Torus Sides" slider to 48, the "Tube Radius" slider to 6, and the "Tube Sides" to 48. This will essentially give you the 'divoted' shape of an apple. Then, simply increase the height of the base to 16. This will give it the look and feel of an apple by realistically portraying it's height.

For this step, drag the "Bent Pipe" shape, found under the "Shape Generators" tab under the "Featured" section, to your workplane.

To make the stem look more like that of an apple's, slide the "Outer Pipe Width" slider to 3, the "Bend Angle" to 45, the "Lead In Length" to 8, and the "Lead Out Length" to 5.

To do this, simple rotate the stem to face upward and place it in the center of the apple using the arrow keys to move it. Once it's in the center, scale the height down by holding the "Shift" key while dragging the top of the shape to a desired height. Color the stem brown to complete the apple. Onto the orange!

To create the orange's base, simply duplicate the apple's base by pressing Ctrl+D, moving it to the side using the arrow keys, and changing the color to orange

To create the pedicel, or the little green nub at the top of the orange, drag the "Limpet" shape, located under the "Shape Generators" tab under the "All" section, to your workplane. Turn it upside down by rotating it vertically 180 degrees and scale it into position by placing it in the middle of the orange base and scaling the shape down to a height of 14. Now that the orange is completed, let's move on over to our yellow pineapple!

To create the base of the pineapple, drag the "Pineapple v1.0" shape, located under the "Shape Generators" tab under the "All" section, to your workplane.

To shape the pineapple's base, slide the "# of Verticies" slider to 15 and the "# of Strips" slider to 3. This should give the base the texture of a regular pineapple. To color the base, simply change it's color to yellow.

To make the pineapple's leaves, start by duplicating the limpet used as the orange's pedicel by pressing Ctrl+D and moving it over to an area where you can freely edit it. Then, duplicate it again and move it up 1mm. Turn the new duplicate into hole and group it with the previous one by pressing Ctrl+G while selecting them both. Center the newly created shape on top of the pineapple's base, scale it up, and duplicate it twice for a total of 3 layers.

While holding the shift key, decrease the height of the pineapple by dragging it down. Make sure one of the sides of the pineapple is equal to about 20mm. This step is just to make the pineapple about the same scale as the other fruits. Let's roll on over to our green fruit, the watermelon!

For the base of the watermelon, you'll be using the same pineapple shape from before. Drag one out to your workplane to start.

First, change the color of the watermelon to green. Then, press Ctrl+D while on the watermelon and rotate the duplicated shape 22.5 degrees. Turn the duplicated shape dark green, and you should have your watermelon.

While holding the shift key, decrease the height of the watermelon by dragging it down. Like the pineapple, this step is just to get the watermelon in line with the other fruits. With the watermelon knocked out, how does moving onto a blueberry sound?

To create the base of the blueberry, once again duplicate the base of the apple.

To create the blossom end of the blueberry, duplicate one of the set of leaves from the pineapple by pressing Ctrl+D, scale it down to a size that would fit the blueberry, align it to the center of the blueberry, bring it down using Ctrl+Down Arrow, and finally color it dark blue to contrast the body of the berry.

Scale the blueberry down by holding the shift key while dragging down on the blueberry. This step is just to make the blueberry relatively smaller than the other fruits because that's the way they usually are in real life. And now, let's conclude our journey with some purple grapes!

For the grapes, you're going to create a small bunch of them. To do this, first place down a pineapple shape. Next, color it purple and duplicate it. Take the duplicate and move it about 80mm to the right. Then, grab both of the shapes, duplicate them, and rotate them 45 degrees. Finally, hit Ctrl+D two times and you should have your first layer.

To create the next two layers of the bunch of grapes, press Ctrl+D while selecting the first layer, scale it down by about 1mm, bring it down about 9mm using the arrow keys, and rotate it 22.5 degrees horizontally. Press Ctrl+D to see the third layer appear.

To make the final layer, just duplicate one of the existing pineapple shapes and drag it down to the center of the bunch.

Similar to that of the pineapple, watermelon, and blueberry, scale down the grapes to be about the size of the pineapple's base.

For this step, simply duplicate the apple's stem and center it on the bunch of grapes

Now, you've made one fruit from each color of the rainbow!
