How to Make a Night Vision Camera

Hi Everyone,

In this video Im going to make a Night vision camera using an old Digital camera.

At first let me explain what is a night vision camera.

So im going to make a a day & night Camera

A day and night camera is a security camera that can see the picture during the day hours, when there is enough sunlight, and during the night in total darkness or minimum illumination. A day and night camera has special lenses that allow infrared emission produced by infrared LEDs and reflected from objects to go through and reach a CCD or CMOS chip inside the camera. As a result, the end user can see picture in total darkness at the distance of infrared emission produced by LEDs. A day and night camera can have infrared LEDs mounted on its housing or can accept the emission, produced by an infrared turret. Day and night cameras often have modifications in their digital signal processor (DSP) that compensates for the difference in illumination between day and night modes. HDR technology may also be used in more expensive models to compensate for the difference in illumination between shaded and lighted areas of surveillance.

In this project i Used an old canon ixus 130 point & shoot camera which was given by my friend as no longer needed it.

Philips screw driver as per the size of the screw of you digital camera

Hot glue gun

Soldering iron

Toggle switch

IR leds or IR led ring of a CCTV camera

Some wires

Tweezers Or forceps

Opening the Camera

Carefully open the Outer casing of the camera with a precision screw driver

Remove the LCD Panel

After the casing is removed you need to remove the LCD panel which is attached to a ribbon cable

depending upon the make model the placement might be different however you can always find that on World Wide Web in my camera it was on the front

the ribbon cable is secured with small clip slide the clip on top and cable will come out check the images for reference.

Open the Camera Sensor

Once you remove the LCD panel you will see the camera sensor.

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHILE DO THIS ANY DAMAGE TO THE SENSOR & THE CAMERA IS OF NO USE THEN

"IF YOU'RE A MINOR THEN PLEASE DO THIS UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION"

The Sensor i secured with four screws and on each screw there is some glue which can be removed of easily

once you remove the screws you will have to open the sensor.

The colorful glass what you see is the sensor( check the image for reference).

Remove the IR FIlter

Film is usually sensitive to visible light too, so an infrared-passing filter is used; this lets infrared (IR) light pass through to the camera, but blocks all or most of the visible light spectrum (the filter thus looks black or deep red).

If we remove the IR filter the camera would be able to see Infrared Spectrum of Light.

So this Small filament what you see is on top of the Camera sensor or on the opening of the shutter

Carefully remove it and keep it aside.

Now place the sensor back and secure it with Screws

Place Everything Back in Place

Once the IR Pass Filter is removed

Secure the sensor back with the screws,

Place the LCD panel back and connect the ribbon cable back

Before putting the outer casing insert the battery and switch on the camera and check it should work

Once its working do a test take your TV remote and press any buttons on the TV remote and you should be able to see the IR led Blinking.

Making a IR Led Connection

SO now the IR FIlter is removed we can make a IR Torch for this camera so that we can see in the dark.

I had a IR led ring from an old CCTV camera which worked well

It works on 12 volts

so I connected it to a 12 volt adapter with a Switch

Usually all the IR Rings have a Light detecting sensor which only works when its dark

Connecting the Led to Power Source

Connect Simple wiring with a Switch and use a DC female pin as a power connecter for the 12 volts.

Solder the wires to the switch and use heat shrink tubing wherever required.

Placing the Led

I used some small round acrylic cutouts which were left overs of my previous project this act as a standoff for my

Led ring which I stuck to the camera.

Time to Test

Works really well.

The images shown are take in pitch dark with the help of the IR LEDs.

Had fun to playing with it

And I might make a Portable power supply so that it can be carried anywhere.
