How to Make a Monstrosity
Welcome. In this tutorial, we will be making a photoshop/photopea monstrosity.
The first thing you'll want to do, is to gather a bunch of interesting images, the weirder the better. While transparent images are preferred, images with backgrounds can be cropped to fit our needs. Some places you can find decent transparent images are https://www.nicepng.com/, https://www.pngarts.com/, https://www.nicepng.com/, or https://www.nicepng.com/.
You will want to have each image on a different layer to start, but It's ok if you don't end up using all the images, or if you grab new ones along the way! Thats all part of the artistic process. These images at the top are the ones I grabbed to begin with!
Cleaning Up Any Backgrounds
I ended up with 1 image with a background. I only wanted the heads of these statues, so I started by tracing around them loosely with the lasso tool, and deleting everything outside of the circle. then I took the eraser, and slowly whittled down the background till the only thing left was the heads I wanted. Take your time, you want as clean of an outline as you can.
Start Squishing Things Together
Now that you have all the images, its time to start squishing things together! theres 2 main methods that I use. You can see both in this picture.
1: just put one on top of the other, and don't blend them at all. This only works for some things, like heads sitting on shoulders, or with stuff like clothing or jewelry. You can se this where I put the state heads on the ice stems.
2: blend them together. Use the blur tool as much as you can on the two objects at the seam where you will be connecting them, then merge the layers and use the patch bandaid tool to fix any discrepancies. you can also use the smudge tool slightly if you need to blur any colors together. You can see this where I connected the ice stem necks with the stone egg body.
Making Things Different Looking
Now that you can stitch two items together, let's change one up a bit!
we can put this picture of an atlas moth we found, and mess with its colors using the color balance sliders. I just tend to play around with it until I get something that looks interesting to me. Turning it green really makes the fake snake heads that atlas moth wings have really pop!
You can play around with the hue/saturation slider as well if you don't like what you're getting with the color balance ones. Just keep going until you get something you like!
Adding Smaller Details
It's important that small details get put in where needed, like with these hands. the ring finger on the right side is overlapping the stomach of the creature! this adds depth to the creation.
You can recreate this effect by lassoing what needs to go in front, then making a copy of that, and putting it on a separate layer. that separate layer will go on the top, causing this effect! You could ofc, just erase the part of the stomach that the finger would be covering as well, this is just the simpler solution.
Weird Background Effects
Now, to make it really wild! merge all your layers, then make a copy of that. hide the top layer, and start messing with filters, the solarize effect, and the inverting effect! Here's a picture of what I did for this monster, and some other examples I have done for other monsters. As usual, the weirder, the better!
when you're done making the effect, unhide the top layer and make the bottom layer slightly bigger than the top. This should really make the image stand out in its weirdness!
Congratulations! You've just make a beast that would make Frankenstein jealous!
