How to Make a Mini Dremel

In this instructable i make a mini dremel cutting tool out of a few very cheap and easy to acquire materials. The mini dremel is great for cutting through small pieces of wood, plastic and Styrofoam. Its also portable and wireless which adds to its convenience. Building this is a great intro into the DIY/ hobby world and will also add to your collection of tools. Listed below are the materials i used for this build

Materials:
-A small motor (these small motors can be grabbed out of any dollar store motorized vehicles)

-A 9 volt battery

-A 9 volt battery snap on connector

-A switch (can be taken from any electric dollar store toys)

-A couple Popsicle sticks

-A metal bottle cap

-A Pen

I start off by snapping the connector onto the 9 volt battery and gluing it onto a popsicle stick.

After this i start to wire the circuit containing the motor, the switch, and the battery. For this i used a push button switch instead of a regular one but either work.

I wire one side of the switch to the battery and the other side to the motor.

The remaining two left over wires can then be connected.

For this circuit you need not worry about which side is positive and negative because it will only make you dremel spin the opposite way

Once the wiring is complete i put more glue down against the Popsicle stick and glue down the push button switch and the motor to Popsicle stick. Be sure to be generous with glue so nothing comes off later

After gluing everything in place, i cut off the extra bit of Popsicle stick that was sticking out.

Once that is done i size up another Popsicle stick and glue it on top of the motor and battery as seen in the last picture

I now remove the center part of a pen, the part that holds the ink.

I push the open end of the pen pipe onto my motor and cut it down to 2.5 cm long. This will be where the blade of the dremel will be mounted

To make the cutting blade i first obtain a bottle cap and cut it in 4 corners. Each cut should be separated by 90 degrees so that the sides will fold out when i try to flatten it.

I then lay it on a hard surface and hammer it until it is flat

Now, using scissors or tin snips i cut out teeth into the cutting blade.

I found that teeth which are wider and not as deep work best because they well not break off as easily.

Once the blade is flat and has teeth in it, it is time to make a hole in the center and mount it.

For this i started off by poking a hole in it with a hammer and nail. I create a hole big enough so that a small screw will fit through the hole.

I then insert the small screw into the hole and screw it into the part of the pen that was attached to the motor.

As an alternative blade i also attached with glue an abrasive blade that is used on actual dremels. These abrasive blades are cheap and can be found at hardware stores.

Now that the blade is on we can test it out. As you can see it cuts into Styrofoam easily and plastic as well, but with slightly more difficulty.
