How to Make a Leather Keychain/Keyring/Keyholder
I made a Leather keyring using a Laser cutter. Some people call it a keychain or keyholder. What I like about making a leather keyring with a laser cutter is that it is easy to make and can be personalized easily, and it looks professional. I will show the basic steps of making the leather keyholder on this instructable. These can then be sold to car dealerships with their logo on it, and other businesses as promotional items. They can also be sold from home to customers who want their names on it etc. It is a very simple process and the result is beautiful
Supplies
"The tools you will need to make the leather keyholder are as follows:
- Eyelets
- Eyelet Pliers
- Ruler
- Hammer
- Leather hole punch
- Rings for the keyholder (25mm or 32mm should be fine)
- Leather pieces or scraps. Opt for a light color. Thicker leather works better.
- Laser Engraver. It doesn't have to be very powerful since you will only be engraving and not cutting."
Design the Keyholder
To create the leather keyholder, I utilized a laser cutter along with Lightburn software. The dimensions of the keyholder measure approximately 30mm x 80mm. Feel free to experiment with sizes until you find one that suits your preference.
Engraving the Keyholder
The engraving process took about 4 minutes. I intentionally kept the outline relatively shallow, as I'll be cutting it out.
Cutting the Keyholder
Ensure your blade is sharp. Align the ruler with the keyholder's outline and make the cut. Aim to cut the leather perpendicularly for clean edges. Depending on the leather's thickness, you might need to make multiple cuts. Begin with a light initial cut to score the area you'll be cutting, which helps keep subsequent cuts straight. If the leather is thin and the blade is sharp, it should cut through in a single stroke.
Punch the Hole and Add Eyelet, and Ring
Using the hammer, punch a hole into the leather. Then, insert the eyelet and use the eyelet pliers to secure it at the back. Attach the ring, and your keyholder is now ready to use.
For added protection, consider applying neatsfoot oil or any other type of leather oil.
Please feel free to leave a comment if there's anything you didn't understand or if you have suggestions on how I could improve.
