How to Make a Latch Lock With FixIts
To show the structural versatility of FixIts we created this latch part using FixIts. Obviously we do not recommend locking anything important using FixIts as it is not strong like metal is, but we felt this was a nice demonstration of what you can do.
Supplies
Ways to boil water :
- Kettle
- On a hob in a pan
- Heat cup of water in Microwave (without the FixIts stick)
Vessel (avoid plastic as FixIts can stick to it)
- Glass cup or
- Ceramic cup (preferred as it retains heat)
Tools
- Drill and drill bits
- Screws
- Pencil
Soften a FixIts Stick
Four easy steps, Heat water, Dunk you FixIts for at least one minute in the hot water, remove your FixIts, Pinch off what you need.
Mould the Latch Staple
Start by shaping FixIts to fit through the corresponding latch. Check and adjust your FixIts as necessary.
Once the right size, drill through the FixIts to create a hole. Do this on a surface that you don't mind drilling into or through.
Mould and Attach Backplate to Staple
Mould a corresponding component as shown in the visuals above. This component will join to the fence/wall that the latch locks to.
Heat the joining edges of the FixIts and fix them together as shown.
Mould and Attach Backplate to Staple
Repeating the step above create another component about the same size as the last to join to the lack component as shown in the images above.
Drill Holes Into the Backplate
Drill small pilot holes for screws to go through so that you can physically attach the FixIts to a door / wall. Mark off where the screws will go on the door / wall.
Screw in the Screws
Drill pilot holes and then screw your FixIts component to the wall.
"Safe" and "Secure"!
Obviously a component made out of a BioPlastic isn't going to be secure, but we still think this is a great example of how you can make things with FixIts.
