How to Make a Haitian Flute

Using physics concepts of waves and sound these are instructions to create an efficient Haitian flute.

What You Will Need

8 ½ in. pvc pipe

½ in. oakwood with diameter of 1 ⅛ in

hot glue

wood glue

drill with ½ in size drill bit and a ⅜ drill bit.

Step 2: Mark Your PVC

Mark where you want each plug/finger hole and mouthpiece to be on the 8 1/2 inch PVC pipe with a pencil.

Remember the hole placement and proximity matters and affects sound quality. The size of the mouthpiece determines sound and tone so the larger the mouthpiece the louder and clearer the sound execution will be.

Step 3: Drill

Using a 1/2 size drill bit carefully drill the opening for the mouthpiece.

Using a 3/8 size drill bit carefully drill each finger hole opening.

Step 4: Add Wood

Add a 1/2 inch of oakwood with a diameter of 1 1/8 inch at the top opening of the PVC with hot glue and then apply a pea-size amount of wood glue to seal if necessary.
