How to Make a Grilled Cheese Sandwich With an Iron

A grilled cheese sandwich is a classic comfort food that is simple to make. Unfortunately, if you are without an oven or an electric griddle, it may seem impossible to make the delicious sandwich. The good news is that you can make a grilled cheese sandwich using some aluminum foil and an iron. This is great for college students or people staying in a hotel without a kitchen in the room.

Ingredients and Matierials

To make a grilled cheese sandwich with an iron, you will need:

an iron

a towel (or an ironing board if you have one)

aluminum foil

butter

a knife

two pieces of bread

two slices of cheese (I'm using cheddar, but feel free to use whatever kind you have available)

Preparation

Lay the towel over a hard surface such as a table or desk. Tear off a piece of aluminum foil. Plug in the iron so that it will have time to warm up while you assemble your sandwich.

Use the knife to spread butter on both pieces of bread. (You may need to microwave the butter for about 10 seconds so that it will be soft enough to spread. If you don't have a microwave, you can gently press the stick of butter to the iron until it softens.) Flip one piece of bread over so the buttered side is down. Place the slices of cheese on this piece of bread. Take the other piece of bread and set it on top of the cheese. The buttered side should be facing up.

Ironing the Sandwich

Wrap the foil around the sandwich. Place the hot iron directly on top of the foil. Allow the iron to sit on the sandwich for about 7 minutes before flipping the sandwich over and ironing the other side. It took me about 10 minutes per side to reach my desired level of toasty-ness, but it could take you more or less time depending on how hot your iron is and how toasty you want your sandwich. To check to see if the sandwich is done, remove the iron and unwrap the foil from around the sandwich (using caution since the foil will be hot).

Once your sandwich has been ironed to your liking, unwrap the foil from around it. Cut it into squares or triangles if you wish and enjoy.
