How to Make a Gorgeous Book Page Flower

With so many vintage books out there that are unable to be recycled (due to the glue and binding material), I thought it would be fun to turn one into a gorgeous piece of art. This beautiful flower can be made any size you would like and costs almost nothing to make.

Supplies

Old Book

Stright edged knife

Hot glue/glue gun

Cardboard

Hemp Twine

Large bowl

Choosing a Book

For this project, you will need an old book. You can easily find them at the thrift store or grab one of your favourites off of your bookshelf to make it even more special. I chose one that was old enough that the pages had yellowed to give my flower an extra vintagey feel.

Preparing the Pages

Start by cutting out pages from the book you have chosen. The easiest way to do this is to fun a straight-edged knife close to the spine. You may want to trim some of the length off of the pages as well depending on the shape of the book you chose.

Depending on how big you would like your flower to be, you will typically want 30 - 50 pages.

Rolling the Cones

Once you have your pages ready, roll each page into an open cone. You will want one end to be smaller than the other but do not completely close up the cone.

Sealing the Cones

Secure the tip of the page in place to create the cone with a little dab of hot glue.

Making the Flower Base

To begin building your giant flower, you will need a base. Use a large bowl to trace a circle onto a piece of cardboard. The size of the bowl you use will depend on how big you want your flower to be. The bigger the base, the larger the flower.

Cut the base out once you have it drawn onto the cardboard.

Building the Flower

To begin building the book page flower, lay your cones around the outer edge of the cardboard base. Secure each cone in place with a dab of hot glue once you have them spaced the way you like.

Once you have the base row in place, keep adding layers. Each new layer should sit in between the cones of the last layer so that your flower begins to fill in.

Filling in the Centre of the Flower

When you get to the centre of the flower and the cone tips are touching, you will want to fill in the centre and cover them up. Grab an extra book page and holding it in the centre, crumple it up.

Finishing the Flower

Add a dab of hot glue to the bottom of the crumpled page and secure it into the centre of the flower to finish it off.

Hanging the Flower

To hang your flower, glue a small piece of twine to the back of the cardboard centre. You can use the twine loop to hang your new flower over some reclaimed wood or anywhere you would like to add a touch of vintage charm.
