How to Make a Fleece Hat! (5 Easy Steps With Pictures)
Whether it be for Silly Hat Day or just to keep your head warm, a fleece hat is by far the best option for you! This tutorial is an EASY yet FUN way to make something with your own two hands! This project is great for all ages!
Supplies
- 1 yard of fleece fabric
- scissors
- sewing machine
Gather Fabric
To begin, grab a yard of fleece fabric of your choice.
If you have a fabric measuring tape, wrap the tape measure around the top of your head. Mark the length and measure out that length on your fleece fabric.
If you do not have a fabric measuring tape, don't worry! Take your fabric and wrap it around your head to measure your hat.
The length is for my hat is 22 inches. Cut the fabric in a straight line at the mark you measured out.
Cut Out the Tassels
Depending on how long you would like your hat's tassels to be, you can cut your height of the fabric to whatever you would like. Have your hat be at least 19 inches long in order for it to fit comfortably on your head (tassels included)! The tassels for my hat are 6 inches long.
After you have decided on a tassel length, next we will cut out the tassels. Cut the tassels from the top of your fabric pattern about 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide: go across the entire top length of your fabric. Each tassel should be the same length.
Fold the Bottom of the Fabric
Next, we are going to fold and sew down the bottom of the fabric. This will create a nice border to our hat!
Flip your fabric over (so that the inside of your hat is facing up). Fold the bottom of the fabric up about 3 inches. If you would like to pin the fabric together, feel free.
Next, at your sewing machine, sew down the border you just created.
Sew the Hat Together!
Flip your hat inside out, align the edges, and sew the edges together. I used a serger sewing machine to sew the hat together in order to give the it a nice, straight edge, but a regular sewing machine will do the trick as well!
Your hat should look almost complete!
Finishing Your Hat
Flip your hat right-side out. Next, using a piece of fabric that you did not use earlier, cut a 1 inch wide, 12 inch long strip.
Take your hat and bunch the tassels together. Taking the fabric strip you just cut out, tie a double knot around the tassels. Be sure to pull the knot tight.
Congrats! You Did It!
Yay! You made your very own hat! Now, go show it off:)
