The Steps Involved in Making a DIY Drawer
It is not an easy job to make a functional DIY drawer. You need to preserve utmost care and follow a proper guide. Don’t worry about this. This guide is for your help. Follow the steps coming below to easily make this drawer.
Mark the Required Size
First of all mark, the required size of the drawer on a corrugated box using a scale and pen or pencil. The overall size of my drawer will be 13 inches in width and 10 inches in length (inside the drawer). You can mark any size as per your requirements. But be careful to follow that size throughout.
Cut the Corrugated Box
Use a blade cutter to the box as per the marked dimensions. The corrugated material is hard and difficult to cut so cut it carefully. Make sure the box is not de-shaped while cutting it. When the cutting process is complete, move to the next step.
Pack the Bottom of the Box
Use tape to pack the bottom of the box. Pak it from the outside first then pack it from the inside. Use glue or any other sticky material to pack it from the inside. Put pressure so that it is intact properly. Then paste a cardboard sheet of the exact size of the box using a glue stick.
Make Inserts for the 2 Walls
Next, make two inserts for two walls of the box. For this, take two pieces of the corrugated box according to the size of the walls. I am making inserts 13 inches in height and 10 inches in width (inside the drawer). Use a blade cutter to cut as per the measured size. Then divide these two inserts into three equal parts by making two cuts. Leave 1.5 inches of inserts uncut.
Paste Inserts
When inserts are ready, paste them on the walls of the box using a glue stick. Put continuous pressure on them for two to three minutes. Make sure to paste them properly because they are going to support the drawers. Now move to the next step.
Make Dividers
Use corrugated box material to make two dividers. Start by measuring the required size of the dividers. The width will be 12.7 inches and the length (towards the inside of the box) will be 8 inches (as per the cuts in the inserts). Cut as per the measured size and the dividers are ready. When the inserts are ready, place them in the cuts of the inserts and the box will be divided into three equal sections each for one drawer. Use glue on the edges of the dividers and intact them properly. When placed, move to the next step.
Start Making 3 Drawers
Now, start making drawers. We will make three drawers. Start by measuring the length (inside the box) and width of the three sections. Use corrugated material. I am marking every side 9.6 inches long and 3.7 inches high. I am cutting pieces 9.6 inches in length by 5.8 inches in height (3.7 inches out of these 5.8 inches will be folded). Make the six sides of drawers, two for each by cutting as marked and then folding.
Make 3 Bases for 3 Drawers
When the six sides are complete, start making the bases. We will make 3 bases, each for each drawer. Measure the size. I am marking 12.4 inches in width and 9.6 inches in length. Then cut these marked pieces of corrugated material with the help of a blade cutter and make 3 bases.
Assemble Sides and Bases
Now we have six sides and three bases ready with us. It is time to assemble them using the glue stick. Then cut 3 12.4-inch long and 4-inch-high pieces of corrugated box to make the backside of the drawer. When the backsides are ready, assemble them with the drawer using glue stick and tape.
Make Front Sides and Handles
The next step is to make the front sides and handles of the drawers. Use the same measurements as used for the backsides. Then make a V-shaped cut at the middle of each front side to make a handle. Then use glue and tape to assemble the front sides with the drawers and the drawers ready.
Wrap It All
Now that the drawers are ready, it’s time to wrap it all up. For wrapping, use wrapping paper. I am using green paper. You can use paper of any color based on your preferences. Wrap properly. It will add to the aesthetics of the drawer.
Place Your Stuff in the Drawer
The drawer is now ready to use. Store your stuff in it and have an amazing experience using it.
