How to Make a Cutting Board
The first step in this product is to resize your wooden pieces for them to fit into a cutting board. For this, you first need to pre-determine your dimensions. In my case, these will be 25 centimeters in length and 10 centimeters in width, with an additional 5 centimeters in height. Use a ruler and a pencil to draw the line you need to cut on. You may either use an electrical saw or a normal one to resize, it is not relevant to this step.
Supplies
There are barely any materials required for this product. The ones needed are the following:
- A Paint Brush
- Varnish
- Wooden pieces of the dimensions you prefer for your cutting board
- Wooden Glue
- Either an electric saw or a manual one with a wooden blade
- Sanding machine or sanding paper
- Measuring device(e.x. measuring stick, measuring tape)
- Ruler
Resize the Wooden Pieces
The first step in this product is to resize your wooden pieces for them to fit into a cutting board. For this, you first need to pre-determine your dimensions. In my case, these will be 50 centimeters in length and 27 centimeters in width with an additional 2 centimeters of height. Use a ruler and a pencil to draw the line you need to cut on. You may either use an electrical saw or a normal one to resize, it is not relevant to this step.
Glue Wooden Pieces Together
The second step is to glue these pieces together. Looking at what type of wood you have, you should arrange these pieces. Either by the texture the different pieces have or if you have different types of wood, then you should arrange these in a symmetrical but visually appealing way.
Rounding Off the Edges
When you have completed cutting out your shape, then you can round off the edges. For my product, I have decided to round off the edges to make my product handier to hold and to put down. For this, all I needed was a sanding (machine or sanding paper).
Fill the Holes of the Cuttingboard
The fifth step of the procedure I have followed was filling all the small holes. For this I used a mixture of sawdust and glue. Which I furthermore applied with a piece of wood and therefore filled them. After that I needed to repeat the process of sanding again.
Sand the Top of Your Product
Additional to rounding off the edges, you should stand your product in general to create a smoother surface and generally a more sterile layer that has not come in any harmful impact. In my case, I have again used the sanding machine and through this I have created a smoother surface for my product.
Varnish
Next, you can apply varnish. I applied a strong varnish which will not go off when I put it in the dishwasher. And I applied the first coating. After doing this, I will need to wait for a time period of 24 hours for the wood to fully react. However, the duration for the first layer to dry and therefore to give me the possibility to apply the other side is just around 20 minutes.
Second Coat
After waiting for 24 hours, your product is ready for the second coat. Follow exactly the same procedure to make the optimal product. If any brushstrokes are visible from the first coat, then you should look out for the second layer that you defiantly don't have any included. You do this by applying a lot of varnish to the brush and going over the complete cutting board in one stroke. Adding more pressure over the long way you progress.
