Turn an old book into a decorative pumpkin that, if stored well, will look just as great next year.

What You'll Need

  • Green crinkle paper
  • An old book
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pencil
  • Green construction paper
  • Preval Sprayer
  • Orange water based paint
  • One or more sticks
  • Wire

Shear the Book Into Shape

Maker Minute: How to Make a Book Pumpkin

Place a blank sheet of paper on top of your book and draw a half circle across the cover. Cut your drawing out and set it aside.

Next, tear the front and back covers off the book. You’ll now use your paper template to cut the pages of the book. Continue until all of the pages have been sheared.

Whip It Into Shape

When you're done, heat a hot glue gun, and glue the spine together. Leave an unglued area at the top, where you’ll later add a stick.

With the spine dry, apply glue to every third page. (You’ll want to put the glue much closer to the spine than what’s shown in the video.)

Prepare the Preval Sprayer

Add 1 oz. of paint and one and a half ounces of water to the jar. Cap, shake and attach the spray can.

Lightly spray the fanned out pumpkin across the top, bottom and sides.

Make the Leaves

To make the leaves, draw and cut two shapes from construction paper. Apply glue to both cut outs and place a wire in the middle. Make two of these.

Finishing Touches

With the pumpkin dry, hot glue one or more sticks, and place them in the center of the book. Stick the wire leaves into the middle, and apply a bit of hot glue to the top, where you’ll dab a small handful of crinkle paper.

This is one smart pumpkin that won’t wilt. Store it carefully and enjoy it for years to come.
