What’s Brown Stew Fish?

Brown Stew Fish is a delicious Jamaican dish that brings a lot of delicious flavor for relatively little effort. It’s mildly spicy (by Jamaican standards), and makes a perfect lunch or dinner dish, whether you’re at home or reheating leftovers at the office.

What You'll Need

-2lb. Red Snapper Fish

-1 Medium Onion (chopped)

-1 Green Bell Pepper(chopped)

-1 tblsp Salt

-1 tblsp Black Pepper

-1 pinch of Thyme

-1/4 oz. Mushroom Soy Sauce

-1/4 oz. Browning

-2 cloves. Garlic

-1 oz. Lime Juice

-1 Scotch Bonnet Pepper (or a bit of scotch bonnet pepper sauce)

-1/2 cup Water

-1/4 oz. Ginger Root

Prepping the Fish

-Use the lime juice/water solution to wash the fish.

-Dry the fish off with a paper towel to get it as dry as possible (to keep oil from splashing later)

-Season the fish with your salt and the black pepper.

-Then heat up pan on high for 2 minutes, add the oil, and turn the heat down to medium.

-Carefully place the fish into the oil in the skillet, and let it pan-fry fish until it turns a golden brown color.

It’s important not to move the fish while it’s cooking, so it doesn’t break apart.

Vegetables

-Remove the fish and replace the oil in the pan with fresh oil.

-Sauté the onions, garlic and green bell peppers for a minute or two.

-Then add water and allow the mixture to cook for another five minutes.

Bringing It Together

-Next, you’ll add the ginger root, mushroom soy sauce, scotch bonnet pepper, thyme and browning.

-Cover the pan and leave it to cook for 5 minutes. After that, add salt to taste and put the fish in to stew and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove the scotch bonnet pepper before serving unless you want a spicy surprise!

Serve with rice & peas, ground provisions, or any of a variety of other delicious Jamaican dishes.
