Sadako from The Ring (Instructables project)

Our teacher gave us an assignment to make a Halloween Instructable. Since we were both fans of the ring we dying to make Sadako. Throughout the project our concept and purpose for Sadako changed overtime through ideas and limitations. Eventually we decided to use Sadako to make a Halloween puppet that could stand on its own and was cheap for us to make, for around $30. Feel free to alter the purpose, materials, or design to fit your needs.

The frame is the first and foremost important part in this design. It is what gives the puppet form and stability.

  1. Cut out a 1.5 feet strip of cardboard, width should be around 4-5 inches. This will be referred to as the spine.
  2. Cut out a 30 inch strip of cardboard about 1-2 inches wide. Make continuous folds in the cardboard to make it more flexible. Make into a circle using tape to connect the ends. This will be referred to as the waist.
  3. Attach the spine perpendicular to the waist using hot glue as shown in the 3rd photo.
  4. Hot Glue a supporting piece from the 1st piece across the entire diameter of the circle. This will be referred to as support A.
  5. Attach a 1 foot by 2-3 inches piece of carboard perpendicular to the spine using hot glue and tape as shown in image 6. This will be referred to as the shoulders.
  6. Cut out a 25 inch strip of cardboard about 1-2 inches wide. Repeat step 2, but attach it using hot glue where the spine and shoulders meet. Reference image 7 while making this piece. This will be referred to as the neck.
  7. Connect a 3 inch wide support from the front side of the spine to the inside of the neck using a liberal amount of hot glue. This will be referred to as support B.
  8. Connect another longer 3 inch wide support from the waist to support B using hot glue.
  9. Punch a hole in at the end of the shoulder. Cut out a 2 feet long by 2 inch wide length of carboard. Make continuous folds in the cardboard to make it more flexible. Make a hole in one end of the arms. Connect the shoulders and arm by threading string through the holes and knotting it. Repeat this for both sides. This will be referred to as the arms.
  10. The frame is now complete.

  2. Drape shawl over the shirt. Make sure to have the length go from the front to the back.
  3. Fill hand and tape over it to keep it in place (best fill is an actual hand)
  4. remove fill from glove.
  5. Cut out pieces of Styrofoam and fill the empty glove with it.
  6. Tape the back of the hand glove to keep Styrofoam in place.
  7. Tape the glove to the end of the arm.
  8. Staple cardboard, shirt, and shawl together to keep them in place.
  9. Inflate a balloon and place the wig on top.
  10. Tape the balloon to the top of the shirt where the neck is.
  11. Sadako is complete

  1. Find or Construct a cardboard box that has the dimensions of around 1.6 feet long, and a little less than 1.5 feet wide and tall
  2. Glue a cardboard layer with a bigger area than the bottom of the box
  3. Cut open a square opening around 1.5 feet by 1.5 feett as shown in picture 2. (Make sure to cut within the box so it doesn't fall off!)
  4. Cut two strips of cardboard and tape them to the top of the box to make it look like antenna

  1. Make two holes toward the front and top of the TV, they should be only a few inches away from the top front corners.
  2. Thread string through the holes from the back to near the hands.
  3. Tape the string to the hands.
  4. By pulling the string through the back you'll now be able to move the hands (see video from intro)
