How to Make Rainbow Cake Pops

IMG_5362.JPG

I love to make cake pops, and usually I just stick with vanilla or chocolate but I was wondering what it would be like to try and make rainbow cake pops.... I think the result is amazing and it's so easy to make because I just modified my vanilla cake pop recipe to make it rainbow! I will definitely make this for upcoming events!

Supplies

Ingredients:

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix + ingredients required to make it
  • 1/2-1 cup vanilla frosting
  • 10oz bag white chocolate wafers
  • rainbow sprinkles
  • food coloring (each color of the rainbow)

Materials:

  • 2 large bowls
  • 1 medium bowl
  • 6 small bowls
  • parchment paper
  • cake pop sticks or paper straws
  • plastic wrap
  • styrofoam block or cardboard box

Baking the Cake

Mix the cake mix with the required ingredients on the back of the box and bake according to instructions. Once baked, set aside to let cool completely. If you do not let it cool completely then it will melt the icing when you combine it.

Adding the Icing and Colors

Take your cooled cake out of the pan to start the crumbling process. Place the cake in a bowl, (breaking it into smaller chunks if it doesn't totally fit), and start to crumble it until there are no big chunks left. Once complete, add the icing in small portions mixing it in until it sticks together when you smush it. Then divide the dough into six separate bowls. Add the color to each bowl and mix in until you have a desired color. Then cover each bowl with plastic wrap and place in the fridge to chill for 1 hour.

Making the Cake Balls

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and take the red dough out of the fridge. Take a small portion, (about an inch), and make a small ball and then flatten it. Repeat with the rest of the red dough. After you finish take out the orange dough and do the exact same thing and stack it on top of the red. Repeat this with the rest of the colors until you are out of dough. Then take one of the stacks and roll it into a smooth, round ball. Do this with all the stacks and place in the fridge and let chill for 1 more hour.

Dipping and Decorating

After chilled, gently take the balls and stick a cake pop stick into them. Then take the chocolate and microwave it at 30 second intervals until the chocolate is melted. You can also do this on a double broiler. Also, if you find that the cake pop sticks are having trouble staying in, then dip the tip of the stick into the melted chocolate and re-insert it back into the ball. Take the cake pops and dip them into the chocolate and let the excess chocolate drip off. Take a generous amount of sprinkles and sprinkle over the cake pops, then stick the cake pops into a Styrofoam block or a cardboard box and let the chocolate dry. Serve and enjoy!
