After creating the charming bookmarks for my cat, which received so much love and admiration, there was a soft buzz about my next project. My dog, who had watched the cat bookmarks receive so much attention, seemed a bit sad, almost as if he knew something was missing for him. It was as if the rumor mill had reached his ears—where was his special creation?

Well, the rumors didn’t lie. Feeling inspired and determined to give my loyal companion something equally wonderful, I decided to make origami dog bookmarks. These delightful new bookmarks are a tribute to the playful and loving spirit of my wiggling tail, designed to capture the essence of my furry friend.

Perfect for dog lovers and book enthusiasts, these bookmarks add a touch of whimsy and joy to any reading session. They’re not just practical but also a heartwarming way to honor the bond we share with our pets. So, the next time you open a book, let these origami dog bookmarks remind you of the loyal companions who make your life so much brighter.

Initial Folds

  • Begin with a square piece of origami paper. If you only have rectangular paper, you can cut it into a square.
  • Next,  Fold the square paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Make sure the crease is sharp and precise.
  • Unfold the paper back to the square shape. You should now have a diagonal crease running from one corner to the opposite corner.
  • Fold the square paper in half diagonally in the opposite direction to form another triangle. This creates an "X" crease pattern on your paper when unfolded.

Getting Started With the Head

  • Once the initial folds are complete, take one corner edge of the square and fold the smaller inner triangles from both sides, creating a shape similar to image 1.
  • Next, flip the paper over and fold the corner of the triangle from the back into a rectangle that intersects at the center.
  • After completing this fold, your design should resemble image 2 from the front.
  • Now, fold the design in half at the center of the inner triangle, resulting in a shape similar to image 3.
  • Then, fold the bottom triangle upwards to achieve the look of image 4.
  • Finally, fold the side triangles into small pockets on both sides, completing the design as shown in image 5 and 6.

Finalizing the Mouth & Nose

  • Now, from the center, take all the curved edges and fold them inwards to form the nose.
  • Next, to create the mouth, curve the edges from the bottom to shape them into rectangles, resulting in a look similar to image 3.
  • Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the nose and mouth are well-aligned and symmetrical. This will enhance the overall facial expression of the origami dog.
  • Flatten the folds gently to make sure the design stays in place. You can use your fingers or a flat tool to press down the folds, ensuring they are secure and the shape is well-defined.

Ears & Finalizing Everything

  • From the top corners of the head, fold down two small triangles to form the ears. Ensure they are symmetrical and well-aligned with the rest of the head to give a balanced appearance.
  • Fold the tips of the ears slightly inward to create a more defined ear shape. This will give the ears a realistic and polished look.
  • Gently press down on the entire bookmark to flatten it and ensure all folds are secure. Use a flat tool or your fingers to smooth out any creases and maintain the shape.

Making the Face

  • Now, let's give our origami dog bookmarks its charming and cuddly face. Using a black pen or marker, draw two small circles for the eyes near the top of the head. Ensure they are evenly spaced and symmetrical. You can make them as expressive as you like—round and wide for a curious look, or slightly tilted for a more playful expression.
  • For the nose, color the nose area with a black marker. You can adjust the size to be as small or large as you like, depending on the nose structure you prefer.
  • Finally, add the finishing touches to the mouth by drawing a curved tongue just below the nose.

More Variation

  • Use a piece of paper with spots or add your own spots using markers. Create a Dalmatian or another spotted breed by varying the size and placement of the spots.
  • Instead of pointed ears, fold the ears down to create a floppy-eared look. This can represent breeds like Beagles or Cocker Spaniels.
  • Make the eyes larger and the features softer to give your bookmark a cute, puppy-like appearance. Add a small tongue sticking out for extra cuteness.
  • Use grey or white paper and draw distinctive markings for a Husky. Add blue eyes and a friendly expression to capture the breed's unique look.
  • Use yellow or golden paper and give the dog a friendly, smiling face. You can also add a paper or drawn-on collar for extra detail.
  • Use brown or white paper and create a shorter, squarer face with droopy eyes. Add some wrinkles and a pushed-in nose to capture the bulldog's distinctive look.
  • Use pink or white paper and add curly fur details using a marker or small cuts in the paper. Give the dog a fancy expression to represent its elegant nature.
  • Use black or orange paper and add a witch hat or a pumpkin accessory. This is perfect for festive, seasonal bookmarks.
  • Create a holiday-themed bookmark by adding a Santa hat, reindeer antlers, or other festive accessories. Use red, green, or other holiday colors.
  • Design your dog with a cape and mask, using bright colors like red, blue, or yellow. Add a superhero emblem on its chest to give it a heroic look.
  • Use rainbow-colored paper or draw rainbow stripes on the dog. This can create a cheerful and vibrant bookmark.
  • Give your dog big, expressive eyes and exaggerated features like those seen in anime characters. Use bright colors and add cute accessories.

These variations offer endless possibilities for customizing your origami dog bookmarks. Have fun experimenting with different styles and designs to create unique and charming companions for your reading adventures.
