How to Make One Geiger Counter With Electronic Components ----Step by Step Instruction for Beginners

GeigerCounter-V1.1.jpg

Geiger Counter with Geiger Tube is one kind of Electronic Circuit System used to measure nuclear radiation. we are showing how to assemble and solder one Geiger-counter with discrete electronic components such as Resistance capacitance transistor and so on.

Supplies

Tools:

1)an electric soldering iron

2)one Electronic pliers

3)Multimeter

4)Solder wire and rosin

5) Geiger Counter Kits GMV1.1(opensource kits could be bought on amazon or ali-express)

You can use an electric soldering iron to solder this device, one long-nose pliers is used to remove the Long pins after soldering. All the solder joints should be around and smooth without faulty soldering as shown in the right figure below. Solder wire and rosin are also essential materials. A multimeter is often used to measure the resistance of a color ring resistor.

Overview of All Electronic Components

let’s take out PCB, we could see the white silk which tells us where to put the Resistors or capacitors or corresponding materials. Small parts are stored in small cases as shown below when you receive the kits. Geiger tube is stored with protecting plastic pipe. Make sure the Geiger tube will not drop down from desk, otherwise it could be broken, since the vacuum tube is really fragile.

Assemble and Soldering No.1 Capacitance C1,C2

Take out number 1 materials, two capacitors of100uf/16v,which need to be plugged into PCB position with C1,C2 silk as shown in figure. All the solder joints should be around and smooth without faulty soldering as shown in the right figure below. Solder wire and rosin are also essential materials.

Assemble Number 2 Materials

0.1uf capacitors for silk C3, C23, C24, C66. 104 means 10*10000pf=100nf=0.1uf. there is no polarity for this kind of Ceramic capacitors.

One by One, You Could Assemble and Solder All the Parts on This Board

Photo-GM-kitv1.1-J305.JPG

You could get one assembled and soldered board as shown. There are some parts have polarity such as electrolytic capacitor, diode(1N4937, LED ), transistor(S8050, KSP42). For chips there is First pin identification method, which could be gotten on datasheet for the chip, on this board there is NE555 and LM358 are been used.

Testing the Board

testing-gmv1.1.jpg

Power on the board with USB to 5.5-2.1 power connector, switch on S1 Power on switch.

Use one 10M multimeter (most multimeters are with 10M internal resistance)test voltage of J2, get 58V voltage with adjustment knob.

Now you could hear the beeping sound of Geiger counter with LED flashing.

Enjoy it!
