How to Make a Leather Keychain in Less Than 1 Minute
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
In this instructable, I will show you how to make a leather keychain/keyring or keyholder in under a minute. It literally takes less than a minute to make this keychain. This keychain is a DIY project and can be made at home. The keychain I will make will be from leather, but you can use other materials such as faux leather, fabric, denim, etc. Making this keychain requires almost no extra skill. I will also show you the tools you will need to make this keychain. The keychain I will demonstrate looks very neat and professional. Let’s get into the procedure for making the keychain.
Supplies
You will need the following to make a leather keychain/keyring/keyholder:
- A die-cutting mold, which I bought from Temu for around R100 (about $6). I was impressed with the quality and price; the cutter works very well and is sharp.
- Some pieces of leather
- A keyring
- Cap rivets and pliers or a punch to close them
- A press to cut the leather. I have a 1-ton arbor press to which I welded a top and bottom plate to press the die onto the leather. There are many different types of presses that do a similar job. According to Temu, you can even use a rubber hammer to cut the leather with the die(See pic). At the bottom of the press, I have a piece of conveyor belt, which works well; you could use something similar. I also use a round steel tube on the press to get extra power to cut the leather (see pic).
Cut the Leather
Put the leather on the conveyor belt and place the cutter on top of it. Then put it into the press. I need bigger plates to cut the whole keyring at once, but for now, I just move it and cut half at a time.
Add the Keyring and Rivets
The cutter also cuts the holes, so all you have to do is insert the keyring, add the rivets, and use the pliers to close the rivets. And you are done. Easy as pie!
