How to Make Honeycomb Shelves

This tutorial will explain how to make two disproportionate honeycomb shelves. One will be bigger which is the base, and the other one a bit smaller. The special thing about these shelves, that instead of the wood being attached by just nails and a hammer, connectors are used. It was very fun making this and it is a great decoration piece.

So when making Honeycomb shelves, planning is key! You want to figure out what kind of wood you want to use, the size, the thickness, and more. A very important step is choosing whether you want to use nails and a hammer to stick it together or like I did, 3D Print connectors and then glue the wood together. My choices can differ from yours, but my instructable will show you how to get the Honeycomb shelves to be and look the same way as mine. Since Honeycomb shelves are different than normal shelves, we have to use more wood than expected. I made two honeycomb shelves; one small and one bigger. The sides of the honeycomb shelves include six pieces of wood. So after measuring the size of your wood, you want to get 6x pieces of that for your first Honeycomb shelf. Other supplies include:

-Hot Glue gun + sticks

-Sanding machine

-6x Small Pieces of wood

-5x Larger Pieces of wood (with same thickness)

-Paint of your choice (I went with wood stain paint)

-Paintbrush

-3D Printed Connectors

When you are done planning, you want to jump right in and start 3D printing the connectors. This will take time, so meanwhile, you can get the wood and ready it all up. The connectors are very important. There should be 24 connectors printed in total; 16 should have 2 sides, so one side can hold one wood and the other can hold another wood and then 8 should be three-sided.

Meanwhile, the connectors are printing, start on the wood. There should be 6 small pieces of wood and then 5 bigger pieces. We want the wood soft and easy to touch. Since mostly wood is coarse and rough, you want to sand it to make it smooth. Using a sanding machine, sand the sides of all the wood until it is smooth and nice to touch. After that, you can start painting the wood. Paint all sides and wait for it to dry.

When the wood is dry and the connectors are done printing, start putting it all together. You want to use a hot glue gun and glue the parts together since hot glue dries quickly and is very strong. Start off with gluing two two-sided connectors to a piece of wood. Then attach a piece of wood to the connectors. Keep doing it till you get the honeycomb shape. For the middle wood piece that holds both shelves together; use the 8 pieces of the three-sided connectors.

Now that it is all put together, you have to wait till it is dry and stable. Now you can enjoy two nice honeycomb shelves.

Your project is almost done. Now just for stability, attach a thin layer of wood to the back of the honeycomb shelves. First, grab a piece of wood and outline the shape of the shelf. Then cut it out. Then you hammer nails into the sides, so that it is connected. Then to make sure it is very sturdy, drill in nails from the wood into the connectors. Then when its sturdy and safe, you can turn it upright.

Now you can paint it or decorate it because you are finally done!
