How to Make Fancy Domino Tiles in Chocolate
This instructable will teach you how to make fancy fake domino tilles. They can be gifted for any occasion, to any friend or family member.
Supplies
Here is a list of the supplies and ingredients you will need if you want to make this project at home (or anywhere else)
Supplies (as shown clockwise on the first picture) :
- A plain bowl. It has to be able to be microwaved so avoid anything with gold paint.
- A small syringe (this one has a capacity of 10mL). Please check that the one you will use is compliant with a food usage.
- A whisk. This one is plain and simple, in metal but very effective
- A chocolate mold of the domino tiles. I got this one for Amazon but you can find them in your local shops too. Go for molds in silicon or else it will be nearly impossible to get a nice result.
- A baking tray. It is hidden in plain sight on my picture but it is more than need to act as a base for your mold
You will also need a microwave oven and a kitchen scale (nothing too exotic for a normal kitchen, I hope...)
Ingredients (as shown clockwise on the second picture) :
- White chocolate : 200 grams
- Black chocolate : 50 grams
- Red sugar paste : 20 grams
- Vegetable shortening : 20 plus 5 grams hence a grand total of 25 grams
Melting White Chocolate
Melting white chocolate is often a delicate business. To handle this problem, just follow my protocol and it will be quite easy.
- In a bowl, put 20 grams of vegetable shortening and microwave it for 1 minutes and 30 seconds on high
- While the shortening is melting, chop your white chocolate. If you are lazy, you can just separate the parts but it will take more time later. If you can get chocolate drops, you can skip this part as it will not be necessary.
- Take the bowl out of the microwave. All the shortening must be melted and look as clear as water. If some nuggets are still floating around, microwave a bit more (20 seconds) then whip strongly to dissolve them.
- Put a spoonful of white chocolate in the bowl. Whisk quickly and the chocolate will melt without problem.
- Add more white chocolate to the bowl until all the chocolate is melted
You should get a very liquid chocolate with a viscosity close to water. If it is thicker, microwave it 20 seconds and whisk.
Molding Your Chocolate
The critical point in this step is to put the mold on the baking tray (I hope you had worst difficulties in life...). It might seem trivial but it has two functions : acting as a support for the mold hence allowing you to put in the fridge but also getting quickly cold in the fridge allowing the chocolate to set quickly.
- Fill the syringe with chocolate then use it to fill the wells in the mold.
- Gently tap the mold to free any air stuck inside the chocolate. Pop any air bubble that will appear with a toothpick.
- Once the mold is full, put in your fridge for at least 30 minutes
Melting the Black Chocolate
This step will be very similar to step 1 but with black chocolate.
- Put 5 grams of vegetable shortening in a bowl. Microwave until it is well melted.
- Chop down your chocolate.
- Put half the chocolate in the bowl with the melted shortening, mix until your chocolate is melted.
- Repeat the previous step with the remaining chocolate.
You should get a very liquid chocolate with a viscosity close to water. If it is thicker, microwave it 10 seconds and whisk.
Time to Fill the Dots
This step will test your patience with two critical steps : getting the chocolates out of the mold then filling the dots with black chocolate.
Getting the chocolates
Gently push the chocolates out of their wells. As soon as they are out, put them on the baking tray with cooking paper, they will stay cold and can be handled without problem.
Filling the dots
To connect fill the dots, you will need to use the syringe. Fill it with black chocolate from the previous step then unleash drop after drop in the dots. Take your time and do not push too much on the syringe or you will get a bigger drop than the dot to fill.
A Last Dash of Color
You can stop at the previous step but this one is a little nice bonus to improve your tiles.
Take a little ball of sugar paste and roll it in a line. Put this line in the middle of the tile to separate both parts of the tile
Some Final Ideas
This instructable is here to show you how to make some tiles.
Feel free to explore more possibilties. You can switch the colors or use colored chocolate. Think about adding aroma for a pleasent change.
