How to Make Cute Vegan Cookies
Helloooo everyone!
This small DIY tutorial will show a super easy and quick way to make great vegan cookies. You won't even notice that they're vegan!
It's just like oreos: you wouldn't think they're vegan, but they actually are. They do not contain any real dairy, and only have possible cross-contact with such due to being produced in the same factories. So it’s a good snack for less hardcore vegans.
And also, even though this is just a little recipe for yummy vegan cookies, veganism shouldn't be taken so lightly.
A vegan diet does not equal veganism. Veganism is a lifestyle that affects all areas of your life, not only the way you eat. Calling yourself vegan is more significant than it seems, as it means altering, for example, clothing choices, as well.
But away from the serious stuff. Let's make cute cookies together :D
Gathering Your Ingredients & Tools
This is just a quick checklist for all the things you need. The images really have it all, but here are also the measurements you need.
Ingredients
- 200 grams of flour
- 100 grams of margarine or any other vegan butter type
- 90-100 grams of sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of Soja (or any vegan type of) milk
- 40-60 grams of cacao powder
Possible Alternatives
- The cup of water can replace the egg, however, one can simply add twice the amount of vegan milk instead to compensate
- Mashed banana for eggs
- Vanilla sugar and baking powder is optional
- Nuts like almonds are optional, however need to be cut into smaller pieces first
- Vegan chocolate is optional, however must be cut into smaller pieces first as well
- Don’t keep cookies in oven for too long, as the chocolate burns quickly: make sure the chocolate is nicely ingrained into the dough beforehand Vegan chocolate is pretty easy to find, simply go for the darker varieties, they usually do not contain milk
- A substitute for vegan butter (Margarine) is coconut oil or almond butter
Tools/Materials
- Bowl
- Measuring cups and/or scale
- Oven
- Timer
- Mixer or pair of hands
- Tablespoon
- Knife or fork
- Mittens against heat
- Spatula

Measure All Ingredients to the Correct Amounts
This step is pretty self explanatory, and all the measurements are in the first step. However, just a quick thing I'd like to add: feel free to use more or less sugar and cocoa powder, depending on how sweet and chocolaty or brown you want the cookies to be.
Also, when you use sugar, it's best to stir through it. This will get rid of the sugar clumps that often form.
By the way, if you ever think of being vegan, don't get caught up with the stereotypes and misconceptions: You don’t need to cut chips out your diet if you’re vegan: most of them proudly use vegetable oils instead of any animal fats. Obviously, being vegan doesn't necessarily mean being healthy :P
Add All the Ingredients Together
You have your bowl. Now, just add all the ingredients together. First, all the dry ingredients:
- Flour
- Sugar
- Cacao Powder
Mix them well together. Before you add the margarine, soften the butter in the microwave first to make it easier to work with. The amount of time in the microwave depends, so check on it every 20 seconds. For some of you, the butter may naturally be really soft, in which case, the microwave wouldn't be needed.
Add your milk and/or water a little at a time. This makes the dough easier to work with. After each time you add a little milk and/or water, mould the dough together. Thoroughly mix the dough together, either using your hands or a proper mixer --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rHLg0fFZtA
As you see, vegan cookies are really easy to make, and despite what many may tell you, being vegan yourself isn't that hard. However, becoming vegan is or at least should be above only seeking to be healthy or losing weight: instead, with this decision you greatly help the environment, as you do not contribute to animal agriculture, which takes up more water and land than any other industry, while thoroughly polluting the earth as well.
Continue Kneading Until Final Mixture & Preheat the Oven
The picture shows you roughly how the cookie batter or dough should look like. It may be lighter because you used less cacao powder or maybe less sticky because you used less flour. But this is just a quick check for you: after kneading it until it sticks together as a big clump and has reached this colour, you are ready for the next step.
Around this time, you should also preheat the oven to 200° C. To save time, you could have done this before even beginning mixing your ingredients. However, you should be mindful of how your oven works, as some turn hotter faster.
Putting the Cookie Batter on Oven Tray
Now this is an exquisite skill, only accomplished by the best of the best-
It requires minimal effort. Sorry about that :D
After you have finished creating the cookie batter and your oven is nice and hot, you can put the cookies into the oven. To do so, you'll need a baking tray and baking paper. Of course other methods such as cooking spray is fine, but for cookies, the paper is always better. To put the sticky mixture on the paper may seem tricky, and it isn't recommended you use your hands: it will just be difficult to get it off your fingers.
Instead, using a spoon is useful, and you simply take some of the dough and place it on the paper as it is. You do not need to flatten it, as this will happen throughout the baking.
Here is a quick video (with some funky music) on how I did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-JEFIr5sT0
BAKE THOSE COOKIES
After having put the cookie dough in little clumps around the paper, nicely spaced apart, you can shove them right into the oven.
I personally set the timer for 10 minutes, which should be more than enough for every oven. Check every now and then if they are ready, as ovens are all different. To do so, simple use a knife to touch the cookie: if it easily breaks through the cookie, it is not yet ready.
Final Step - Enjoy Once Done
Whenever your knife or fork finds some resistance when piercing through the cookie, you are probably done. All that's left to do is to take them out. Be sure to use mittens or some kind of thicker cloth to prevent burning your hands.
Also, when you take the cookies off the baking paper, do not use your hands. It isn't as dangerous as touching the metal tray, but the cookies are definitely also pretty hot. Simply using a spatula will suffice.
After removing the cookies, wait a few moments for them to cool down before enjoying them.
