How to Make Cuban Flan
Flan is a popular Cuban dessert with a rich taste of toasted sugar and condensed milk. Although its recipe has changed throughout the years, originally being a savory treat, it is still a delight to enjoy. This instructable will teach you how to make your own Cuban-style flan.
Supplies
Ingredients needed are:
- Five eggs
- 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup of evaporated milk
- 1 cup of regular milk
- 1 cup and 1/3 of sugar
- 1 cup and 1/2 of water
Materials needed are:
- Blender (a bowl and whisk would work too, but this is just to get the ingredients blended well)
- Measuring cup
- An oven mitten, or anything to use to hold something extremely hot
- Flan mold
- Pressure cooker
- Can opener
- Ladle, or a long utensil to scoop something extremely hot
You Spin My Head Right Round
You're gonna get the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, both evaporated and regular milk to put into the blender. Blend everything well until it gets to a liquid-y consistency, and leave to the side for the time being. This mixture won't be used until later on, so keep it somewhere nearby.
***Reasoning for both evaporated and regular milk: recommended to use for a nice soft texture, and better taste.
It's Getting Hot in Here
Pour the cup of sugar into the flan mold, place it on the stove and begin to melt it on high. Stir while it melts to ensure it doesn't stick to the mold, or clump together. Once it gets to a light-brown color, place it on counter space and pour the mixture from earlier onto it. Don't panic if it fizzles and bubbles up, that is to be expected.
Under Pressure
Carefully place the flan mold into the pressure cooker, without tipping it too much. Pour a cup and a half of water around the flan mold. Make sure that it isn't floating around in the pressure cooker, press down on it if that happens. Leave it in there for 30-40 minutes. Leave it to cool for 15-20 minutes after taking it out.
The Final Countdown
Once it's done cooling, flip the flan mold onto a plate, and slowly lift it as you let the flan fall onto the plate.
