Preheating the oven first thing allows for the oven to be at the correct temperature by the time the cookie dough is stirred up. It also saves time by not having to wait on the oven to preheat after the dough is mixed and ready to go in the oven.

Mix All of the Wet Ingredients in a Mixing Bowl or Mixer (preferrably)

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/3 cup shortening, 1/3 cup butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed), 1 egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Mixing the wet ingredients together ensures that everything will be mixed in properly. It also allows the butter to become softer instead of adding it straight into the dry mixture where everything would clump together and not allowing for the cookies to be nice and soft in texture.

Mix All of the Dry Ingredients Together

In a separate large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of white flour, 1/2 teaspoon soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt

mixing these ingredients in a separate bowl allows for the flour, soda and salt to mix in well with each other before combining all ingredients together. Making sure that all ingredients are evenly distributed ensures that each bite will be flavorful and smooth in texture.

Combine the Wet Ingredients and Dry Ingredients Together in One Bowl

Combine the wet mixture and dry mixture together in one bowl and stir on medium-high in the mixer for about 3 minutes.

Mixing the ingredients for 3 minutes allows for all ingredients to mix together to have an even taste.

Add in the Chocolate Chips

After the wet ingredients and dry ingredients have been mixed together for 3 minutes, add in 1 cup of milk chocolate chips for about 1 mintue.

Mixing the chocolate chips into the mixture for about one minute allows for all of the chocolate chips to be mixed in with the cookie dough but it is not too long for the chocolate chips to melt or break into pieces.

Preparing the Cookies for the Oven

Place the cookie dough on a baking sheet in even rows, spacing about 1/2 inch in between each cookie. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees fahrenheit until they are golden brown on the edges. Let stand on baking sheet for 5 minutes to allow for cooling.

Spacing 1/2 inch allows there to be enough room for the dough to expand, to become a cookie but does not allow for all of the cookies to be touching each other once they are melted in the oven.

Serving the Cookies

These cookies are excellent by themselves, but adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream to a bowl and crumbling the cookies is another great idea! Your guests are going to love these cookies, and they will be a hit anywhere and anyway that you serve them. Enjoy!
