Supplies
Before we begin, here’s everything you’ll need:
- A MIDI keyboard or digital piano (any model works)
- A MIDI to USB cable to connect your piano to computer.
- A Synthesia-like software I used SeeMusic which is free to use but internally paid if you want to export your videos without watermark, there are many free one out there too like VFX piano)
- A tripod or camera stand
- A smartphone or a camera for video recording
- Video editing software, any free simple one would be okay!
- Optional: Lighting setup (LED strips, ring light, or soft desk lamp)
The Setup
Set up your keyboard and camera before you begin recording.
- Place your tripod at an angle that captures both your hands and the keyboard.
- Make sure your lighting is soft and not too harsh; warm light gives a cozy tone.
- Open your piano software (like SeeMusic) on your computer; this will show falling notes or glowing keys that make your video look professional.
- Double-check your sound connections if you’re using external speakers or a mixer.
Recording
Now comes the fun part playing and recording!
- Record your screen while playing on Synthesia (this captures the falling-note visuals).
- Simultaneously record a top-down video of your hands on the piano.
- Keep your background simple so the focus stays on the music.
- Try a few takes to get the smoothest performance possible.
- Pro tip: Use headphones while recording to avoid background noise.
Editing
This is where your video comes to life.
- Import both your camera footage in see music and assign it to your recorded MIDI file
- Sync the visuals so that the falling notes match your real-time playing.
- Also make sure to perfectly align your video to the keys of the virtual piano in the app you can use the side adjustment tools to crop, scale or move your video in all four directions as shown in the image above.
- Adjust color tones, a slightly warm or cinematic filter can make the scene feel artistic.
- Add text overlays, your YouTube channel name, and subtle animations if you want.
- Use fade-in and fade-out transitions for a polished final look.
